Marla Berkowitz
... that Marla Berkowitz knew some people would ask, "Why is she making those big facial expressions?"?Source: https://www.thelantern.com/2020/04/interpreting-a-crisis-ohio-state-lecturer-key-figure-during-dewine-press-conferences/ "when Berkowitz first became a staple of the daily press conferences, she knew there would be ignorant comments such as, “Why is she making those big facial expressions?”

- Comment: I tried to provide an alt that would go into more explanation of ASL interpreting at a televised press conference but it was just so long and awkward; maybe this would work for the quirky? Hm, and the DYK helper is insisting I end this with a ?, but there's already one inside the quote. Do we really want two?

- Interesting woman, on good sources, no copyvio obvious. - Sorry, wherever the question mark, I don't care about a hook that is quirky but nothing else. I think you could just use the lead sentence, even spelling out American Sign Language, no? Try it, and we can work on it together. If I word it I can't review it. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:42, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt, would this work?
- ALT1:
... that Marla Berkowitz knew some people would wonder why she made exaggerated facial expressions during her American Sign Language interpretations of COVID-19 press conferences? - ALT2: ... that Marla Berkowitz considers herself a Sumain, a coined term meaning people who communicate with each other using their hands?
- ALT2a: ... that Marla Berkowitz considers herself a Sumain?
- I'd have to add Sumain into Deaf culture, where it redirects, but that ought to be done anyway. —valereee (talk) 12:26, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you, valereee! ALT1 doesn't work for me because it takes too long until we arrive at the explanation, and some - I'm afraid - will turn away not curious about that exaggeration. (Language question: "make ... facial expressions" sounds strange to me, - perhaps just me?) If we turn it around, there's no surprise. Another COVID-19? Really? - ALT2 is acceptable, but I'm not the strongest supporter of having to explain a term in a hook, nor of what a subject says about herself. Good though if you want to promote the term. I'd just say, as the lead does: "... that Marla Berkowitz, the only ASL Certified Deaf Interpreter in Ohio, became known for interpreting the governor's daily press conferences on television? What do you think? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:08, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt, we could get rid of the term explanation, maybe...let me see if it's possible to create the article Sumain, which currently is a redirect. I don't love using the first sentence, as Certified Deaf Interpreter isn't even a redirect, is barely mentioned at the most likely redirect, Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, and doesn't seem to be notable enough. —valereee (talk) 15:13, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- Yeah, doesn't look like it. We appear to be, for now, stuck with Sumain being defined in various articles but not having an article of its own —valereee (talk) 15:25, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- interpreter for the deaf is self-explanatory, doesn't need an article --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:42, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt, it's the Certified Deaf part. Berkowitz is herself Deaf. She's not the only ASL interpreter in Ohio, she's the only Certified Deaf one. It's a major distinction; it's the difference between someone whose native tongue is German and someone whose native tongue is French translating French to German. It's fine when we're discussing a menu, but you probably want a native German speaker when the nuances are really important. Berkowitz works with hearing interpreters, who interpret for her, and then she interprets for the Deaf.—valereee (talk) 19:17, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- You decide. Thanks for the nuance between deaf and Deaf. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:37, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- I added a shortened version. Let the promoter decide. :) —valereee (talk) 20:37, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- Here's in between:
- ALT2b: ... that Marla Berkowitz considers herself a Sumain, meaning people who communicate using their hands?
- all 3, but still have these reservations about subject considering herself. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:13, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
