Mahurangi Harbour
- Source: "The southern right whale (SRW) is the baleen whale most closely associated with New Zealand because, in the past, they used to come inshore to sheltered harbours on the mainland to mate and calve (Carroll et al 2011). However extensive hunting in the 19th century depleted their numbers and shrank their range. Today the right whale population appears to be recovering and now are rarely but increasingly being sighted around the mainland. These areas include: East Coast, Hawkes Bay, Wanganui/Wellington, Mahurangi Harbour/Auckland, Otago, Kaikoura/Canterbury, Northland and Nelson (Patenaude 2003)." - source

@SL93: could you tell me what comes across as odd or hooky about this hook? I'm afraid I might be missing the point somewhere. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 17:00, 6 October 2022 (UTC)

- @SL93: hmm, maybe we can make it a little tighter?
- I'd say these are better :) theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 06:40, 7 October 2022 (UTC)

- ALT1b: ... that Mahurangi Harbour is one of the few places in New Zealand where a southern right whale can be found resting or calving?
- I'm just changing it a bit because the source refers to one country. SL93 (talk) 23:06, 7 October 2022 (UTC)
- theleekycauldron What do you think? SL93 (talk) 20:36, 8 October 2022 (UTC)
- ah, yeah, my mistake – I think that works :) theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 22:02, 8 October 2022 (UTC)
- A review of ALT1b is needed. SL93 (talk) 01:30, 9 October 2022 (UTC)
- Approve ALT1b. It's basically how I understood the original hook; but you are right, it didn't actually read that hooky then. Struck the others. –LordPeterII (talk) 09:23, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
- ALT2 ... that after being extensively hunted in the 19th century, southern right whales have returned and can again sometimes be seen in Mahurangi Harbour (pictured)?
- Nominator said at DYK talk they’d be happy if someone else took this on. This is what it says in the source, I’ve added this sentence to the article and used it for a hook verbatim. Schwede66 16:55, 22 October 2022 (UTC)
- Hook is in the article, sourced, and pleasing to read. CMD (talk) 19:06, 22 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Schwede66, Chipmunkdavis, and SL93: I'm not sure the hook checks out as-is; the source doesn't say that the whale left the harbour, although it does imply that sightings stopped. I'm not sure those are truly the same? theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 19:24, 23 October 2022 (UTC)

- ALT2a ... that after being extensively hunted in the 19th century, southern right whales can again sometimes be seen in Mahurangi Harbour (pictured)?
- How about ALT2a? Would that do, theleekycauldron? Schwede66 00:54, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
