Lynching of John Carter
... thatSource: [1]a mob ofan estimated 5,000 white people looted businesses and an AME church for flammable material in order to burn the lynched body of John Carter, a Black man who was hung and shot by a white mob in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1927?
- Reviewed: Template:Did you know nominations/Thomas S. Riley.
- Comment: I'm hoping we can get this on the front page soon, in anticipation of obvious unrest related to the trial for the murder of George Floyd.

Overall: Meets requirements. Interesting article, although rather disturbing subject. (t · c) buidhe 06:51, 19 April 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks User:buidhe--but I see now that I have the word "mob" in there twice (I tweaked the hook a few times while I was editing). I think I'm going to take out the first one--let me know if you don't think that's a good change. Drmies (talk) 14:09, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

- Buidhe and Drmies, this hook would seem to be a decent amount over 200 characters, unless I cannot count correctly, which is entirely possible... Eddie891 Talk Work 19:27, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
- You're right, it's 230 characters. Maybe it can be trimmed somewhere? (t · c) buidhe 19:33, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
- Eddie891, it's 198 if you take out "a mob of" (struck through) and "the lynched body of John Carter", which is pretty much the title of the article. But I can be more economical: ALT1 is 188, without the linked article and the question mark. I'm actually puzzled why this was approved almost two weeks ago and is still here. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 19:39, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
- ALT1:
... that some 5,000 white people looted businesses and an AME church for flammable material to burn the lynched body of John Carter, a Black man who was hung and shot by a white mob in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1927?- ALT2:
... that in the 1927 lynching of John Carter in Little Rock, his body was burned in a Black business district, up to 5,000 white people looting businesses and an AME church for flammable material?193 characters in toto if you restructure the sentence, Drmies. Uncle G (talk) 15:00, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- ALT2:
- As per Template:Did you know nominations/The Law Is Too Slow it might be worth holding off on this one whilst Drmies sorts out what xe wants to do with a run-on sentence. Uncle G (talk) 14:11, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
- I don't understand why "Black" is capitalized but "white" is not, both in the hooks and in the article. Shouldn't they have the same treatment? BlueMoonset (talk) 15:31, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
- ALT1 is 212 characters and still ineligible: both linked article and final "?" must be included in the count. I'd also like this to wait while "Black" and "white" is settled. To me, the proposed ALT2 does not work as a sentence; there's a disconnect between the business district and the up to 5,000 white people. I've struck all the hooks; a new one that doesn't exceed 200 characters is needed. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:50, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
- BlueMoonset, the Black/white issue is a style accepted widely by (American) style guides, including that of the AP and the NYT, and it is acceptable on Wikipedia, though there are some who grumble. I'm not sure what disconnect you mean: a mob of 5,000 flooded into the Black business district of that town, dragging the corpse of a Black man to burn it right there and set an example for others. Let me try a tweak, and please tell me if that's good enough:
- ALT3: ... that some 5,000 white people looted a Black church for wood to burn the lynched body of John Carter, a Black man who was already hung and shot in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1927?
- Drmies, sorry I didn't see this sooner—your ping didn't go through because you forgot to add a sig. (No sig, no ping.) I hadn't known of the style change from "black" to "Black"; perhaps "white" will ultimately catch up, but having read of the change (which happened last June for the AP), I am dropping my concerns in that regard. ALT3 is an improvement and comes in at 177 prose characters, so I'm approving it. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:36, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
- BlueMoonset, shoot you're right, I forgot to sign. My apologies, and thanks for sending this on. Drmies (talk) 16:44, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
