Joseph Smith presidential campaign, 1844
[edit]- ... that Latter Day Saints founder Joseph Smith, in his 1844 presidential campaign, proposed cutting Congressional salaries to help fund freeing the slaves by compensated emancipation? Source: "Reduce Congress at least two-thirds. Two senators from a State and two members to a million of population will do more business than the army that now occupy the halls of the national legislature. Pay them two dollars and their board per diem (except Sundays). . . . . Petition, also, ye goodly inhabitants of the slave States, your legislators to abolish slavery by the year 1850, or now, and save the abolitionist from reproach and ruin, infamy and shame. Pray Congress to pay every man a reasonable price for his slaves out of the surplus revenue arising from the sale of public lands and from the deduction of pay from the members of Congress. . . . . The Southern people are hospitable and noble. They will help to rid so free a country of every vestige of slavery, whenever they are assured of an equivalent for their property." Joseph Smith, Views of the Powers and Policy of the Government of the United States
- ALT1:... that in 1844, Latter Day Saints founder Joseph Smith became the first Mormon to run for President of the United States and the first American presidential candidate to be assassinated? Source: "But the first Mormon to seek the White House was also the first Mormon -- Joseph Smith Jr., the founder of the Mormon Church, whose 1844 presidential campaign is historically notable not only because it was the first one in which the candidate was assassinated." ABC News The First Mormon Presidential Candidate

- Two great hooks, though perhaps over-long, but sadly several paras are unreferenced, so fails the criteria for now. New & long enough anyway. Is a QPQ needed? Better check the rules on all these points. Let me know if it is ready for re-review in a reasonable time. Johnbod (talk) 02:24, 6 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Johnbod: Okay ready for re-review. No QPQ is required in this case due to a lack of DYK credits. Thanks. Smooth alligator (talk) 22:54, 18 August 2017 (UTC)
- Length, date ok. All passages are referenced. QPQ not needed. Copyvio not found. I prefer ALT1, as it is more 'hooky' and less WP:OR. Nevertheless, there are a few bare URL references that need to be addressed before the nomination is good to go. --Soman (talk) 13:50, 19 August 2017 (UTC)
- Fixed. Smooth alligator (talk) 14:38, 19 August 2017 (UTC)
- Note: I struck original hook, which is over the DYK maximum of 200 characters at 207. ALT1 is well within the length requirement. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:49, 19 August 2017 (UTC)
