Jirayr Ohanyan Çakır
[edit]... that the president of the Turkish Chess Federation was once an Armenian?
- Reviewed: House of Soterius von Sachsenheim
Created by Proudbolsahye (talk). Self nominated at 00:07, 27 May 2013 (UTC).
- The article name needs to be in bold, not piped.
- It is ambiguous: was the person "once an Armenian"? Is the current president of the Turkish Chess Federation an Armenian? (Jirayr Ohanyan Çakır seems to have been born in Istanbul of Armenian descent.)
- Proposed clarified wording:
- ALT1: ... that Jirayr Ohanyan Çakır, a former president of the Turkish Chess Federation, was of Armenian descent?
Have not checked the rest of the article, pending this fix. Cynwolfe (talk) 15:00, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me! Proudbolsahye (talk) 16:49, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
- Have struck original hook, and labeled clarified version as ALT1. Nomination needs a full review. BlueMoonset (talk) 00:20, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
- The article appears to pass DYK criteria for date, length (though a bit short at around 1800 bytes) and referencing with good faith needing to be extended to the majority of the refs in Turkish. However the hook is a bit non-descript. I was working on trying to find a more interesting hook angle by playing up the connect with Tigran Petrosian but another editor has deleted all mention of Petrosian in the article as "not relevant". So the question then becomes, is there another angle we can work to get a little better hook out of this? Also, as a small aside, the hook and body of the article refer to him as a former president of the Turkish Chess Federation while the lead refers to him as the chairman. Could we go with one title or the other throughout the article to be more consistent? AgneCheese/Wine 02:34, 16 June 2013 (UTC)
- I changed the titles so that it can be one title throughout. I admit this may be one of my less interesting articles. The hook might attract a few Chess players and some Armenia or Turkey lovers here and there. But, I actually believe its the most interesting hook we can come up with. Given the social context and the ongoing conflicts between both Armenians and Turks, it may spark some considerable interest among a broader base. Therefore, I suggest we do keep this hook. - I appreciate the change. I was worried that the editor who removed the Petrosian reference may further challenge the article and make it unstable but after 3 days of no activity on the article or talk page it looks like everything is settled. I see at WP:CHESS there is a discussion where editor questions the notability of Jirayr Ohanyan Çakır but doesn't seem to be concerned enough to put the article up for AFD. Even so, going off of the basic WP:GNG policy, it appears this article passes the notability criteria with the subject's profile in several, independent reliable sources. That said, with the article passing all other DYK criteria for date, length, referencing and good faith extended for the foreign language sources with no apparent signs of plagiarism or close-paraphrasing, I don't see any further reason to hold up this nom. Yeah, it is not a very punchy hook but "interesting-ness" is in the eye of the beholders and having a diverse range of topics on DYK helps counter systematic bias on the project.
