Gern Nagler
[edit]- ... that Gern Nagler and Billy Howton successfully used a draft antitrust lawsuit to convince NFL Commissioner Bert Bell to create the league's first player pension? Source: "Nagler was involved with the early efforts to organize a players' union, and was a key figure in the creation of the first players' pension. Nagler and Cleveland Browns end Billy Howton presented NFL Commissioner Bert Bell with a draft anti-trust lawsuit, threatening to file if the NFL did not immediately establish a pension for its players. The gambit worked, and the pension was formally established three years later." (source: The Oregonian article)
- ALT1:... that Chicago Cardinals end Gern Nagler helped coach the Fort Sill base football team to a perfect record and a Poinsettia Bowl victory in 1954? Source: "Nagler missed the 1954 NFL season due to military service. While posted at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Nagler helped coach the base football team to the All-Service Championship, winning the 1954 Poinsettia Bowl (source: Lawton Constitution article)

- The expansion on this article was well over 5x and was new enough at the time of nomination. The article is long enough at almost 2,200 characters, and the hooks are interesting and adequately formatted. I can't access that Oregonian page, but will AGF that it adequately supports part of the first hook fact. Unfortunately, the bit about him spending one season with Pittsburgh doesn't have an inline cite, which is required by the DYK rules. ALT1 is verified by the Lawton Constitution article. I do have a couple of other concerns here. First, the fifth paragraph doesn't have any references at all, which goes against DYK guidelines. DYK doesn't require GA-level sourcing, but at least one reference per paragraph is the minimum standards. This information should be available on his Pro Football Reference page, in addition to the length of his Pittsburgh career. Second, ref 3 (one of the only links I was able to spot-check) doesn't verify when Nagler was drafted; again, Pro Football Reference should have this listed on his profile there. The other source I spot-checked, ref 2, had no issues. Fix these couple of issues and this article should be ready. Giants2008 (Talk) 01:21, 24 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Giants2008: Done
- Citations have been provided for the draft, his PFR profile (which indicates his one year in Pittsburgh) and his Pro Bowl selection.
- The text of the Oregonian article is available on this blog, and I was able to confirm the text of the article via newsbank.com. (Newsbank is reliable, but requires an login account to use. I get access via my public library.)
- Please let me know if you have any other concerns for me to address. Thanks, caknuck ° needs to be running more often 12:25, 24 October 2018 (UTC)
- The changes look good. This article is ready to go now. Giants2008 (Talk) 17:41, 24 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Giants2008: Done
@Caknuck: @Giants2008: @Edwardx: sorry for the inconvenience, this has been sent back to the nom page following issues raised by The Rambling Man, including an orange tag on the article indicating that it needs additional citations. Please have a look at these issues, and then the page can be resubmitted. Thanks — Amakuru (talk) 22:59, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Amakuru: Since it was my approval that caused this, I went ahead and sourced/removed the uncited items. If the primary contributor wants to source and re-add the other items with references I don't have access to, I certainly wouldn't object. Giants2008 (Talk) 00:07, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
- As it's been over a week since this was returned to the main DYK nominations page, I'm marking this page for a fresh review by another reviewer. Giants2008 (Talk) 23:36, 30 November 2018 (UTC)
