Corps of Invalids (Great Britain)
[edit]- ... that a unit of disabled and aged veterans garrisoned key parts of Great Britain in the 18th century? "Thenceforward for the remainder of the XVIIIth Century the Invalids were extensively employed on garrison duties." As the article describes, they garrisoned various castles, palaces and ports at different times.
- ALT1:... that a man was required to only be able to walk unaided and be "capable of fireing over a wall" to serve in the British Corps of Invalids? "The only formal requirement was that they were ‘capable of fireing over a Wall’ and could walk independently without the aid of another person."
- ALT2:... that the elderly and wounded men of the Corps of Invalids may have dissuaded the Duke of Ormonde from landing at Plymouth during the 1715 Jacobite Uprising? "The companies sent to Plymouth must have just forestalled the Duke of Ormonde, who landed or attempted to land near that port the following month, but retired on being foiled in his hopes of raising the West."
