Yaakov Shwekey in Miami Boys Choir?

[edit]

Hello,

Are you really sure that Yaakov Shwekey was a member of the Miami Boys Choir when he was a boy???? i'm asking that because I have absolutely all the albums of MBC that were ever produced and I cannot found the name "Yaakov Shwekey" anywhere on the albums, except on the album "Miami 25", but at that time he was already a grown-up!!!

So, if Yaakov Shwekey was really a child-member of the choir, it was under another name?

Djampa (talk) 10:33, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Supposedly the actual surname is "Choueka" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.98.212.157 (talk) 20:27, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

thank you, i looked again but I couldn't find any boy with the name "Choueka".

I've found some assertions on the web, that he was in the MBC for only few months :

... Yaakov Shwekey but I think he was in it for a few months at the most ...

Yaakov Shwekey began his career singing for a very short time in Miami Boys Choir
Djampa (talk) 08:37, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The reason why he doesn't appear on any albums, is because he left after a few months, I believe because of the Sfardic accent of his youth —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.82.127.164 (talk) 03:38, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I believe this assertion needs better evidence than a blog site and a freewebs site. I have tagged the sentence accordingly in the article - I had a search on Google and Google News but couldn't find anything suggesting he had sung as a boy in the choir. Bigger digger (talk) 16:33, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Don't you get it? if he is an ALUMNI than he'd have to have been in the choir as a boy!! 68.196.178.227 (talk) 22:52, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I feel that the links to Mostly Music for each album are not needed and seem to be an advertising move. Is there a general policy on external links to retail sites? If no one objects I will be removing them in a week or two.Joe407 (talk) 13:39, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I think it was put there so that people can sample the songs, not as a ad. please do NOT remove it.68.196.178.227 (talk) 02:00, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

After looking at the guidelines, WP:ELNO, I think that these links should be removed under sections 4 & 5. WP:LINKSPAM prohibits leading readers to a specific commercial site. Thoughts?? We could ask for arbitration if you'd like. Joe407 (talk) 21:57, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The guidelines prohibit PROMOTING a site, NOT providing the source where one can sample the songs (and mostly music.com, happens to be the only jewish music site with song samples for all these albums, although Jewish jukebox and Eichler's do have some of them).68.196.178.227 (talk) 02:38, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe just one link to Mostly Music under Ext. links titled specifically to hear music clips. Having each mentioned of each album linked seems a bit like an ad move by MM for my taste. But I do see your point. I'm unsure. I'm going to post this to a few places for comments. Joe407 (talk) 05:18, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A Third Opinion:
1. Looking through the revision history of the article and the contributions of the editors, it is clear that everyone has made some fantastic improvements to this article, but at the same time it seems that some editors are only here to improve a very narrow range of articles. Please embrace everything that wikipedia has to offer and everything you can offer it by helping out on other articles and getting a feel for all the policies and guidelines.
2. From WP:SPAM: "Wikipedia spam also consists of external links to websites which primarily exist to sell goods or services". The tracks listed are short excerpts, and listed towards the bottom of the page after the selling opportunity has been made.
3. From WP:LINKS#Important_points_to_remember: "External links should not normally be used in the body of an article. Instead, include appropriate external links in an "External links" section at the end and/or in the appropriate location within an infobox or navbox." This is the first time I have seen external links in the main body of an article.
4. Similar to 1, WP:ELNO states that "one should avoid [...] Links to web pages that primarily exist to sell products or services". Mostlymusic clearly exists to sell music.
5. Normal wikipedia practice seems to be to link tracks or albums to their own page if they are sufficiently notable, not to a commercial site. I have looked at some wp pages for major Western artists and a few I had never previously heard of and can't find a single one with a link to a site such as mostlymusic.com, the iTunes page, last.fm, etc which speaks for the consensus in the approach of not linking to external commercial sites.
6. A list of links to a specific commerical website is also suggests a directory, and of course that is not what wikipedia is for - WP:NOTDIRECTORY.
7. I would like at this point to remove the links to mostlymusic as they are clearly in breach of wp policies, but I would like to see some responses from other editors first. It is a shame that Shwekey doesn't seem to have his own website that could be linked to.
Cheers, Bigger digger (talk) 16:20, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia does not need to provide samples of songs if there are not specific points about them in the article, which can only be understood by hearing a sample. Wikipedia does not exist to provide links to other sites for more information; it is not a link farm. Using the "external links" section is not a solution. I have seen other articles with links like this removed from the EL section recently, and while I understand some people (including me) may be sad to see them go, their removal is completely in line with Wikipedia policy. --A Knight Who Says Ni (talk) 00:36, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As per the WP:3O, I've gone through and removed the external links. There are also a few minor edits. Thank you to all the 3O people and commentors here. Joe407 (talk) 05:11, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good improvements Joe, Bigger digger (talk) 13:59, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Birth date

[edit]

The hebrew wiki says 1975. This one says 1977. Joe407 (talk) 05:26, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It was 1977 confirmed by Shwekey himself (see interview with Israeli news on caeseria DVD).Motty613 (talk) 01:12, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Reliable Source?

[edit]

In this edit a web address that I couldn't previously access was corrected, and now that I can see it I'm not sure it's suitable. My knowledge of Hebrew is zero, so I have to rely on a Google translation but the main page does not suggest this source is suitable. It has previously been queried whether Shwekey sung as a boy with the Miami Boys Choir (see above) and this potential self- or user-authored page doesn't seem suitable. Can someone tell me a bit more about goop.il? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bigger digger (talkcontribs) 13:19, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

while i don't know much about the specific site (Shwekey.goop.il, which i've always been able to access, and i don't know why you had to change it) its probably amutuer created, since goop.il is meant for free website building, but i don't see why you don't find the site suitable, Shwekey definately sang with Miami being as was a guest alumni on the 25th miami experiance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Motty613 (talkcontribs) 01:20, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There are sources to support the fact that he sung as a guest alumnus as an adult, but the assertion on the page is that he was also a member as a boy, which no independent, reliable source seems to be able to verify. Bigger digger (talk) 10:16, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Stern Bar-Mitzvah

[edit]

I'm not sure this should be here.

  1. The controversy was about Stern and the NY penal system. Shwekey was an incidental performer.
  2. Perhaps this should be rewritten to be "Shwekey performed at Tuvia Stern's Bar Mitzvah" - if the bar-mitzvah is deemed notable to get an article. More likely it should be moved to wikinews.
  3. If there is any new information about Shwekey in any of the write ups, the information should be incorporated into the article and sourced. External links to the articles are not appropriate here

Update: After reading the linked articles, I found the only one about Shwekey was the New york post. For now I'm removing the others and will wait to hear what people say about the NYP article. Joe407 (talk) 12:54, 25 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Stern Bar mitzvah Part II

[edit]

After a month or two, all mention of Tuvia Stern and his affair are gone from the news. As Mr. Stern and his event have been deemed not-notable by the community (a passing one-hit news item), should this section be in the article about Yaakov Shwekey? Joe407 (talk) 07:50, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

possible vandalism

removing POV tag with no active discussion per Template:POV

[edit]

I've removed an old neutrality tag from this page that appears to have no active discussion per the instructions at Template:POV:

This template is not meant to be a permanent resident on any article. Remove this template whenever:
  1. There is consensus on the talkpage or the NPOV Noticeboard that the issue has been resolved
  2. It is not clear what the neutrality issue is, and no satisfactory explanation has been given
  3. In the absence of any discussion, or if the discussion has become dormant.

Since there's no evidence of ongoing discussion, I'm removing the tag for now. If discussion is continuing and I've failed to see it, however, please feel free to restore the template and continue to address the issues. Thanks to everybody working on this one! -- Khazar2 (talk) 14:40, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed page move

[edit]

As he is predominantly known in the media and to his public as "Shwekey", WP:COMMONNAME says that the article should be at Shwekey. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 08:01, 26 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Page has been moved. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 16:02, 5 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure where you got the idea that he has no first name. Everywhere online it states "Yaakov Shwekey" BangKettle (talk) 15:32, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@BangKettle: Can you provide sources then? ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 15:34, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Google "Shwekey". NONE of the results don't contain 'Yaakov'. BangKettle (talk) 17:58, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@BangKettle: I'm not going to do your research for you per WP:BURDEN. If you can't provide any sources that contain "Yaakov" then it's not going to be moved back. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 18:02, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry. (I was referring to this: https://www.google.com/search?q=Shwekey&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS899US899&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8)
Here's some sources: https://www.yaakovshwekey.com/ | https://www.instagram.com/shwekey/?hl=en | https://music.apple.com/us/artist/yaakov-shwekey/859962826 | https://mostlymusic.com/collections/yaakov-shwekey BangKettle (talk) 18:26, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@BangKettle: The first 3 sources are all primary sources which would obviously use his full name. The 4th source I don't know if it's primary or not but just 1 source isn't enough. WP:COMMONNAME says that the sources that show the name is more commonly used must be independent, reliable, and in English. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 18:41, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have no idea why anyone would think this performer would have no first name. I can find no source anywhere explaining this. Everywhere his name is stated it's full. Can you tell me otherwise? BangKettle (talk) 18:59, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@BangKettle: It's not that people think he has no first name. It might just be that most people call him by his last name. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:00, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Is there any source for this? I know his music, & hear people sometimes just use his last name, but he's not called just "Shwekey" as a name. Our former President was "Trump". Does that mean we should rename the article from "Donald Trump"? BangKettle (talk) 19:10, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Can we try to properly revisit this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by BangKettle (talkcontribs) 01:27, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support based on some of the sources (Youtube, fandom, and his own website aren't proper sources) but also because this is common practice. I honestly don't even know why I said no to the move in the first place. Hell when I google "Shwekey" it automatically assume "Yaakov Shwekey". I'm not aware of any article that uses only the person's last name (Except for some musical artists such as Bon Jovi (which is a band but it comes from "Jon Bon Jovi")) and I don't see why this should be any different. ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 20:19, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's never too late to repent...(-; ZucherBundlech (talk) 21:08, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ZucherBundlech: Just an FYI, I'd recommend checking out WP:RS so you know what to look for when finding sources as Spotify, YouTube, and Fandom are not usable sources in an article and have no weight in whether or not a RM should go through. Your other sources seem to be fine though. ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 23:03, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Seems like in 2005 when the article was created, his last name was huge on his albums back then.[9] So whoever dealt with it then probably thought he only used his last name. Apparently no one paid much attention to it until years later. BangKettle (talk) 21:30, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
