Very poorly written and biased

[edit]

Many sections of the article are just meant to promote the idea that women are unfairly treated, even beyond ordinary sexism. The problem is that contributors have been trying to add everything related to the subject to this article in a disorganized manner. The contents contain portions that can be described as Gender discrimination in the United States as well as Gender roles in the United States, and various policies or events that have some particular relevance to women. I understand from the high number of "Women in ..." articles, dearth of "Gender roles in ...", and complete lack of "Men in ..." articles that Wikipedia prefers containing only the article about women in a particular country. However, I would not be opposed to changing this.

Here are the changes I would like to make to the article:

  • Organize content into four headings
Political and legal status, to include most legislation on relevant subjects
Including "reproductive rights" (with a more neutral title)
Representation (in politics, universities, media, CEOs, etc.)
Gender roles, using neutral sources that do not advocate for either "traditional" or "progressive" gender roles, but rather describe current expectations of women in society
To contain violence against women subsection
Gender discrimination
  • Remove survey showing that 40% of women under 30 want to leave the United States. This is a shocking result, but is probably a knee-jerk reaction to Trump (as can be seen from the increase from Obama to Trump presidency). Just because this many people say they want to leave the country doesn't mean they have any place where they would like to go, and emigration rates are still not especially high. As a single poll, it's probably cherry-picking.
  • Rewrite lead to be comprehensive
  • Remove current First Lady and Second Lady, they are not important figures in politics
  • Add portraits of 2-3 significant women notable for their activity in women's issues.

Any thoughts would be welcome.—Naddruf (talk ~ contribs) 03:27, 16 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, I'd never seen this article before you mentioned it on Talk:United States. It's really a hodge-podge, isn't it? I'm in favor of a major restructuring and rewrite, but I'd suggest you do it in user or draft space and then put a link here for interested editors to collaborate, so there's time and space to come up with a solid new article that folks can agree to, rather than trying to work on it piecemeal in mainspace. (And the repeated mentions of "United States has never ratified the U.N's Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women" belongs in the article on the UN convention, not here.) New Draft

[edit]

I created an outline for a new draft in my userspace: User:Naddruf/Women_in_the_United_States. After this is reasonably complete, I can try to make the changes within this article so we don't have to delete the original article and start over. If anyone has issues with my restructure, you can bring them up here.—Naddruf (talk ~ contribs) 13:48, 22 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Aaishwar: @Dahlsydney: You put notices that this article was being edited for a university assignment. Is this still happening? I haven't seen any changes. If it's not happening, I will resume work on the draft I made.—Naddruf (talk ~ contribs) 17:08, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sexual harassment and assault

[edit]

I think the statistics about sexual harassment and assault are definitely relevant in this article. When "women's issues" are discussed, sexual harassment is one of the most notable ones. @201.216.223.193:Naddruf (talk ~ contribs) 16:38, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Students

[edit]

Hi all, my name is Kate and I am in a Gender and politics class and am looking to possibly edit this page. It looks like it could use significant rearranging, additions, and an expansion of the intro. Does anyone have ideas for additional topic areas this article should go into? The title is broad, but the article doesn't seem to encompass a ton. Kef1170 (talk) 23:52, 17 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
