Dear Winthrop Editors, A lot of work was done to reformat nearly 100 improperly cited reference sources. Please help maintain Wikipedia standards for this article by using proper citation styles.

  • Simple website links are sometimes appropriate in a general usage, but not for citing a specific fact.
  • Using<ref></ref> tags get the link to show up in the reference section but it's still not a properly formatted citation.
  • Do not cite the same reference repeatedly in succession. If several consecutive sentences can be cited to the same source then you do not need to (shouldn't) redundantly cite each individual sentence separately. Just cite the paragraph or section once as a whole.
  • Use <ref name="something">{{cite... to cite the first of multiple identical references, and just use<ref name="something"/> (notice the following slash) to cite subsequent instances of that same reference.

Not notable on own merits Rogermx (talk) 19:02, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

I don’t disagree with merging, but shouldn’t it go to Winthrop Eagles instead of the main university article? I think that’s the standard way to do it — individual sports programs go on the school’s athletics page, not the main school page. I also would not be adverse to having this as a stand-alone article if in the future there are reliable sources to support doing so. Right now, there’s just not enough out there — but other than the massive difference in reliable sources (and other than that Mrs. Lincoln how was the play), I don’t see any reason that Winthrop Eagles men’s basketball could have an article but esports could not. (If, again, the sources were there — they’re currently not.) TheOtherBob 14:15, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

Why do enhancements get deleted??

Why do updates get deleted even with documenting the source? There are tons of things that could be added here Rhkyley5 (talk) 14:56, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

The most recent material that you added was removed because you didn't provide any reliable sources. (IMDB is not considered a reliable source in Wikipedia articles.) ElKevbo (talk) 15:56, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

Edit warring to add details about one degree program

An unregistered editor - currently using 2607:F280:3000:15C:66D8:156A:0:AF8 - has begun an edit war to add details about one degree program, the Bachelor of Design. Our advice about college and university articles is clear on this topic: "Because Wikipedia is not a directory, do not attempt to list every major, degree, or program offered...."

(There are some details about other degree programs in this article that also need to be removed. I will wait a bit to do that while this discussion is taking place.) ElKevbo (talk) 00:05, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for beginning a discussion about this and for sharing the helpful information. I agree that some details can be removed from the article but how are such determinations made? For example, the Bachelor of Design is a new degree at the university, with new areas of study as outlined in the source, but you removed that content unilaterally. I have no interest in edit warring; one reversion does not constitute an edit war. But I do feel strongly that the section on Winthrop's academics can be expanded to highlight "notable academic divisions (such as faculties/schools/colleges)" per the guidelines. As described in WP:UNIGUIDE, we generally don't include information about specific degree programs and only include information about the degrees i.e., we say that an institution awards the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees without going into detail about the specific disciplines in which they award those degrees. Of course, there are exceptions for programs that are especially noteworthy e.g., historically important, prominently discussed in the media or scholarly literature. We typically don't make exceptions for programs just because they're new; that usually falls afoul of WP:NOTNEWS.
I agree that the section could be expanded with information about how academics are organized at the university; that would be a great addition to the article! ElKevbo (talk) 07:33, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for the helpful information. Do you have a good model in mind that can be referenced to help grow the Winthrop article? I had been looking at Indiana University Bloomington (incidentally, we both went to grad school there), but it appears to violate some of the guidelines you shared. To your mind, is there an ideal university article that might serve as a better example? Cordially, 2607:F280:3000:15C:66D8:156A:0:AF8 (talk) 16:28, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
Nearly everyone who edits article is a volunteer with a tremendous heterogeneity in editing experience, knowledge, and interest so there are a lot of inconsistencies and issues in many articles. A few articles have been scrutinized and edited more heavily and with greater expertise, particularly our "Featured" articles and our "Good" articles, so they are possible role models. You also find it useful to ask for guidance or advice, general or specific, at the Talk page of the Higher Education Project in Wikipedia. ElKevbo (talk) 22:05, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
