Professional debut error
[edit]I removed the following info because América-SP did not compete in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B in 2006. So the info is wrong. América-SP competed with Corinthians in the Campeonato Paulista that year, though.
He started his professional career at Corinthians in 2006 and made his first professional debut against INDIA helping Timão avoid relegation to Brazilian Série B.
This info needs to be fixed, and also needs a reliable source. --Carioca (talk) 21:03, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

The result of the move request was: moved, sort of. The consensus is that there is no clear primary topic, so Willian will be moved to Willian, Hertfordshire and a disambiguation page will be created at Willian. Willian Borges da Silva will remain at its current location. Jenks24 (talk) 14:42, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
– A Brazilian international footballer is going to be more of a WP:PRIMARYTOPIC than a village of 300 people. Last month, the footballer got 33,483 views to the village's 1,897—this is decisive, especially considering that some visitors to the village's page were likely looking for the footballer. The village has a grand total of nine incoming links from mainspace (I fixed an additional two that referred to the footballer), compared to over 50 for the footballer. It's true that eventually the footballer may fade into obscurity, but see Talk:Luis Suárez#Requested move; we can move it back if that ever becomes the case. -- BDD (talk) 00:40, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
- Naming of Brazilian footballers is pretty inconsistent, so I'd be fine with making Willian a redirect to the current title and renaming the village accordingly. I'd generally prefer to see footballers' names in the versions they appear in WP:RS, but I understand that's sometimes impractical, such as when names are repeated over generations. --BDD (talk) 00:44, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
- Oppose If the village is renamed, why shouldn't it be Willian, North Hertfordshire ? And even if we rename the village, a disambiguation page should be instituted. All pages with titles containing Willian -- 76.65.128.252 (talk) 03:58, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
- You're right about the qualifier. I don't do much with British places, so the correction is appreciated. I also didn't realize how many other Willians there are. A disambiguation page is called for, probably even if we don't deem this footballer the primary topic. --BDD (talk) 15:27, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
OpposeNeutralWhere is in the data to show that da Silva is more commonly known as Willian?--Labattblueboy (talk) 13:27, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
- I found Sky Sports, the article's first ref, Shakhtar's official site, UEFA, Daily Mail, Bloomberg Businessweek, Daily Mirror, The Daily Telegraph, International Business Times, and FIFA with a quick search. --BDD (talk) 15:27, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
- Completed a search myself. "willian" -"da silva", football produces 911K hits[1] whereas "willian" "da silva", football procudes only 142K hits. This certainly leads me to believe that the footballer is most commonly known as Willian. The Town of Willian, under search terms "willian" -"da silva", town, -football, produces 486K hits[2]. Maybe Willian should be a disambig page, either way I am now neutral on the matter.--Labattblueboy (talk) 16:33, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
- Comment - We seem to be having a conflict between the two primary arguments in WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, Most likely to be searched, and enduring notability. In my opinion, in this case the enduring notability trumps the likely to be searched. Is this a temporary "more likely to be searched", and in a month or two will go back to being about the same? Things always get huge search hits around when they are in the news, but often die out, and the likely to be searched needs to be less of a temporary thing. --Education does not equal common sense. 我不在乎 00:59, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

- Oppose - Willian should be a disambig, there are many footballers with that name and arguments for PRIMARYTOPIC are weak. GiantSnowman 08:21, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
- Oppose -- Generally only monarchs are known by their forename alone. There are no doubt a few artistes whose stage name is a single forename, but they are an exception. If the place has to be moved it should be to Willian, Hertfordshire. In England we usually use the county, not the district to disambiguate. The best answer is however probably to provide the article on the Hertfordshire village with a dab-hatnote, unless there are a lot of people called Willian who need to be listed. Peterkingiron (talk) 16:19, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
- Oppose, for now - The footballer in question is not enough of a household name to deserve having his mononym as the title of his Wikipedia article. After all, he's no Ronaldo, Robinho or Ronaldinho. – PeeJay 20:45, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Willian Borges da Silva → Willian – Subject is the most notable article by the name "Willian", compared to two other lower-profile footballers and a small English village, and this can be seen via a quick Google search. WP:COMMONNAME also applies, for at least in English-language sources, subject is known solely as "Willian" without any surname – '''tAD''' (talk) 23:20, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

- Willian (disambiguation) to Willian. The current news dominance of Brazil in football news will fade away over time. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 05:24, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
- Oppose and instead Support opposite, speedy restore of previous RM outcome per previous close of User:Jenks24 13 September 2012 and per Anthony Appleyard. i.e. speedy revert 14 July 2014 The Almightey Drill moved page Willian to Willian (disambiguation) over redirect) probably not releasing it was a RM close, wasn't tagged as such at Talk:Willian (disambiguation). Requested move 27 June 2018

Not moved. There is a clear absence of consensus for the proposed move. bd2412 T 13:18, 7 July 2018 (UTC)
– Clear primary topic by both long-term significance and common usage. He is the only one of the four footballers to have played internationally, with a long and storied career, while the village in Hertfordshire is pretty small and insignificant. Utterly dominates the page views as well.[3] The last meaningful RM was in 2012, and I think the objections then about him not being a household name are no longer the case. — Amakuru (talk) 19:54, 27 June 2018 (UTC)
- Longer-term page view analysis including data from when the page was titled Willian (footballer) here. Dekimasuよ! 20:43, 27 June 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose Too many Willian - this is just the Brazilian spelling of William. Leave as is. In ictu oculi (talk) 20:44, 27 June 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose and why are we just using these peoples' first names? Maybe in Portuguese these people are commonly known just by their first name, but I'm pretty sure most English speakers don't know these people as just a first name. These articles should probably all be moved to include their last names in the titles. Rreagan007 (talk) 00:42, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
- The footballer under discussion here is universally known simply as Willian, not just in Portuguese. See for example this BBC article - the prose refers to him simply as "Willian" throughout, with his full name mentioned only in a sidebar "fact file". I would bet my life savings that 99.999999% of Chelsea fans have no clue what his full name is, as he is only ever referred to (in England/English) as Willian.... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 10:08, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

- Comment - with all due respect to the !voters above, the oppose votes here don't make much sense, and completely fail to address any of the criteria mentioned at WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. As outlined in the nomination, there are typically three things we look for in a primary topic: long-term significance, common usage, likelihood that readers will be searching for the topic in question rather than others, and page views. As a prominent and famous footballer, I contend that this footballer dominates the other "Willian" topics in all these areas. Certainly, as Dekimasu says, the page views (our most measurable statistics) suggest that this is head-and-shoulders above any other topic in terms of what readers are searching for, and a cursory Google search will reveal that this footballer dominates common usage in sources too. And it's true that the name may be an alternative form of William in Brazil and elsewhere, but this is an encylcopedia not a dictionary, and in the absence of any article discussing that name, I'm not sure how that is relevant. Thanks — Amakuru (talk) 11:41, 3 July 2018 (UTC)
- Support per nom. None of the oppose votes make a policy-based argument. We have multiple topics with title "Willian", of which the Chelsea footballer seems to fulfill both criteria for WP:PRIMARYTOPIC – long-time significance and reader expectations (i.e. pageviews). No such user (talk) 08:30, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose. No clear primary topic. As far as long-term significance is concerned, I would argue that a village has far more than someone who kicks a ball around a field for a living, however small it may be. It'll still be there long after he's been forgotten. Only a handful of sportspeople have that sort of long-term significance; as of yet, Willian is not one of them. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:12, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
