English or Welsh?
[edit]Mr. Harris is currently categorized as an English immigrant to pre-Confederation Canada. His brother, Robert Harris (painter), is categorized as a Welsh immigrant. William was born in England and Robert was born in Wales, but is this the sole basis on which we should determine categorization? The impetus for this discussion is an e-mail OTRS received from the Prince Edward Island Welsh society, suggesting that "Welsh immigrants" would be a more appropriate categorization for William. If there are no objections after a few days, I'll make the change. Sarcasticidealist (talk) 23:38, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- My source for POB is Robert Tuck's, Gothic Dreams, the biography of Harris. Tuck states on page 15, "...Harris was born near Hemer Terrace, Bootle, near Liverpool, England...the fourth son and fifth child of William Critchlow Harris, senior, and his wife, Sarah Stretch". Of his father, Tuck states, "After failing to make a success of farming in Conwy Valley in North Wales, [Harris] removed to Lancashire, the home of Sarah..." Make of that what you will. Presumably the father was Welsh but the mother was English.Verne Equinox (talk) 23:51, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- I don't think anybody's denying that he was born in Liverpool; the question is whether place of birth should be the sole determinant for the category. Sarcasticidealist (talk) 23:56, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
