Manatees in science fiction

[edit]The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:West Indian manatee/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.
Manatees occur in the Nariva swamp, Trinidad, where they are protected. Recent estimates run to over 40 animals (pers com--no ref). There are regular sightings in a managed protected area locally known as the 'manatee pond'.
