The geographical items are now alphabetical order by country. None of these places is known world wide as the West Coast, so there's no reason to favour any one of them over the others. Grutness...wha? 08:03, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Western coast of Cantabria

There's a West coast of Cantabria redirect to this, which I found by accident; the English title is a direct translation of the Spanish name for the area, which is a ... barco? ... of Cantabria; "Costa Occidental". I think its title should maybe have a capitalied "Coast" but I also wasn't sure how to reference it in the usual style for disambigs; "West Coast" is just as adequate a translation for Costa Occidental...Skookum1 (talk) 22:31, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

Canadian usage(s) of "West Coast"

I was just going to add to the place section, "In Canada, "West Coast" is a reference to British Columbia". But it's not quite that simple; in teh context in that setennce teh meaning is cultural/regional. If it's in a more geographic sense e.g. as West Coast of Canada then the geographic corresopndent is British Columbia Coast. However, within British Columbia it means the Outer Coast, and the West Coast of Vancouver Island in particular, though in only a general sense; within the context of Vancouver Island, i.e. how Islanders speak, it would always mean Tofino-Ucluelet/Pacific Rim Nat'l Park and adjoining coastlines; not so much the island's west coast nearer Victoria, or way up in Kyoquot or Quatsino, which is though/spoken of as "North Island". The fourth meaning, when used from within BC in a cultural-regional sense, means t he whole of the coast from Vancouver down to San Diego, i.e. what is normally thought of as the West Coast of teh United States is extended within the BC usage to include Vancouver and Victoria as part of "the West Coast"; this is not a usage shared east of the Rockies all that much, where the term means BC only. I'd venture that Seattlites and Portlanders would also think of "West Coast" as including Vancouver-Victoria; this usage does not extend much farther north except in political/adminstrative terms. Anyway here's the four in point form:

1. in Canada, particularly Central and Eastern Canada, "West Coast" means British Coplumbia (conceived of as Vancouver mostly) in a cultural and regional sense
2. "West Coast of Canada" can mean the British Columbia Coast, i.e. the physical coastline
3. Within British Columbia, when referring to regions within the province, "the West Coast" means the outer coast of Vancouver Island
4. Within British Columbia, "the Weet Coast" most commonly refers to the cultural and historical region encompasing the metropolitan centres of teh WEst Coast, from and including Vancouver south to San Diego.

Again, that last one is almost identical to West Coast of the United States but it's also the "native British Columbian usage" - not surprising when you read enough BC history to undersand the colony/province was opened up from that direction and has retained economic ans social ties since. Canadian purists maintain that "the West Coast" means only BC/Vancouver/Victoria.....I guess it's why I'm not a Canadian purist....Skookum1 (talk) 22:31, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
