Spelling of last name
[edit]German sources spell Werner Schröer's last name with an "ö". These sources include
- Berger, Florian. Mit Eichenlaub und Schwertern. Die höchstdekorierten Soldaten des Zweiten Weltkrieges. Wien, Austria: Selbstverlag Florian Berger, 2006. ISBN 3-9501307-0-5.
- Fellgiebel, Walther-Peer. Die Träger des Ritterkreuzes des Eisernen Kreuzes 1939-1945. Friedburg, Germany: Podzun-Pallas, 2000. ISBN 3-7909-0284-5.
- Ring, Hans and Girbig, Werner. Jagdgeschwader 27 Die Dokumentation über den Einsatz an allen Fronten 1939-1945 (in German). Stuttgart, Germany: Motorbuch Verlag, 1994. ISBN 3-87943-215-5.
- Wübbe, Walter. Hauptmann Hans Joachim Marseille Ein Jagdfliegerschicksal in Daten, Bildern und Dokumenten (in German). Schnellbach, Germany: Verlag Siegfried Bublies, 2001. ISBN 3-926584-78-5.
I have the impression that Umlaute are not well known to the English speaking community. However, this should not refrain us from using them when they are appropriate and correct.MisterBee1966 (talk) 08:52, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
- There are a number of German sources spelling it "Schroer" as well:
- I guess some more investigation would be required. Inwind (talk) 12:17, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
- I am speculating here but due to the similarities in the pictures I am guessing that the lawyer Hansjoachim Schröer ([Hansjoachim Schröer]) is his son, he who pointed to the spelling issue in the first place.MisterBee1966 (talk) 12:43, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
The suggestion is correct: I am the son of Werner Schröer. The correct spelling of my father's name is 'Schröer' - as you can see from his certificate of birth. My parents lived in Italy for a long time. Perhaps this is the reason for writing 'Schroer', because the italian langue has no 'ö', 'ä' or 'ü'. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.144.65.26 (talk) 15:16, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
