Change
Based on the 2007 census conducted by the Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia (CSA), this woreda has a total population of 138,926, an increase of 90,186 over the 1994 national census, of whom 70,504 are men and 68,422 women; 10,758 or 7.74% are urban inhabitants. This is primarily attributed, as per writings such as Wolkait-Affairs-Achamyeleh, is to the resettlement project conducted by TPLF.

- Not done for now: Why would you want to removed the sourced text from the end of that section?
Answer: The text has factual error which was deliberately made to justify Achamyeleh’s claim of land based on conspiracy. The increase in population size in Welkait over 13 years of period was 48, 740 which is 35%. For comparison, the overall population size increase for Tigray during the same period was 27%.

The article commences by noting the geographical state of Welkait from 1991 - which is a very small fraction of it's long history. This is insufficient and misleading as the pre 1991 history provides essential context, which is absolutely cruicial to the current state of affairs. It is also important to note that 1991 was also a critical period of regime change that has influenced the demographic shift in the area. Therefore either the content should be removed or supplemented by pre 1991 information. 2A00:23C4:A27:9800:E80A:C6D1:E484:1670 (talk) 03:27, 4 August 2021 (UTC)

Before 1991 wolkait was under Gondar administration not under tigray administration. The people of wolkait don't consider themselves as tigrayans but the tigrayan ethnicity was forced against them.Genocide has been committed since 1991 for almost 27 years against the wolkait people by Tplf and allies Nathnael0983 (talk) 18:08, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
- Absolutely correct! TPLF killed and displaced over 500,000 Amharas from Welkit, bringing in Tigreans from Mekele and other places to settle in the area. Many Amharas were told that if they did not identify as Tigreans, they would be immediately removed from Welkit. 2001:5A8:410C:2100:A4:571A:2AF6:DC2C (talk) 15:53, 11 October 2024 (UTC)
Welkayit is a Land Forcefully Annexed by Tigray!
[edit]Welkayit has been annexed by the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) in 1990's as part of a plan to secure the Region of Tigray another international border with Sudan; this is following the Tigray People's Liberation Front's fallout with the newly formed Government of Eritrea in the north, caused by a land dispute between Eritrea and Tigray.
For 30 years, as part of the Region of Tigray , the people of Welkayit has faced persecution, marginalization, imprisonment and ethnic cleansing since the people of Welkayit are not ethnically Tigrays. 2605:8D80:32C:F4CA:443B:C793:166A:59BF (talk) 00:34, 30 May 2022 (UTC)

"Welkait (also spelled Wolkait or Wolqayt; is a woreda which was historically part of the northern Amhara region of Gonder in Ethiopia.[1]" is wrong. Correction "Welkait (also spelled Wolkait or Wolqayt; is a woreda found in Western Tigray Zone. WelQait is historically part of Tigray but was briefly forcefully annexed to Gonder from 1944-1990 by Emperor Haileselassie.[reference]
Reference Dataset: Western Tigray in 101 historical and 18 ethno-linguistic maps (1607-2009) from Ghent University Geography department - link to reference https://zenodo.org/record/6576524/files/Database%20historical%20maps%20Western%20Tigray%20v2.pdf
Important qoute from the reference
" Out of 101 maps, spanning the period 1607-1967, 92 were precise enough to be analysed, of which 62 display territorial control. Descriptive statistics on the dataset as a whole are presented. Starting from the late 17th C., internal boundaries are clearly shown, with 35 maps (between 1683 and 1941) displaying a boundary that is located well south of the Tekeze River, or even south of Simien (Fig. 2). Welkait is explicitly included within a larger Tigray confederation (periods 1707-1794; 1840-1886; and 1939-1941) (Fig. 3); it is briefly mapped as part of Amhara in 1891-1894 and part of Gondar from 1944-1990. At other periods it appears independent or part of a larger Mezaga (“dark earth”) region. The Amhara/Gondar – Tigray border is mapped on the Tekeze River at short intervals in 1844-1847 and 1891-1894 and then more permanently between 1944 and 1990. The meta-analyis of the historical maps shows that for the larger part of the last 300 years or more, Western Tigray has been under Tigray jurisdiction, with a border running along or across the Simien massif (Fig. 5). However, at times of upheaval, the territory has been briefly reorganized under either the Amhara polities or was autonomous. These maps demonstrate that the argument that Welkait was “always a part of Begemdir”, or else Amhara, is not based on evidence, apart from a territorial reorganisation in the mid-twentieth century. In contrast, contemporary Tigray is a valid territory, whose legitimacy stems from modern federalism's faculty to create a region away from concepts of the Ethiopian empire-state. In 1991-4, when the boundaries of the Tigray Region were established as part of federal Ethiopia, local self-determination was way more important than historical maps. Remarkably, except for one, all 20th C. ethno-linguistic maps of the Ethiopian state sustain the current extent of the Tigray region. In other words: the Amhara nationalist narrative that there was continuous ancestral ownership of Western Tigray is not confirmed by a meta-analysis of the historical map database. We conclude with the suggestion to especially consider the recent and subrecent actual world, including language maps." Gudtime (talk) 02:29, 26 November 2022 (UTC)

WelQait returned to Tigray after brief forceful annexation Semi-protected edit request on 26 November 2022 (2)

Wrong statement "It is believed this annexation was for geopolitical purposes with the primary goal of obtaining a direct border with Sudan. The TPLF also annexed areas from the other regions in the country for similar purposes.[2] "
Correction
Despite the brief forceful annexation of WelQait by Haileselassie and Dergue regimes, the demography remained majority 97% Tigrayan. This is because it was established and settled by Tigrayans since the 1st century AD during Axumite Kingdom and the mere 4 decades forceful annexation didn't change the language which remained Tigrigna, the culture which remained Tigrayan, and the name of the places which remained in Tigrigna. When the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia was established by the 1991 constitution, Regions were established according to Article 46 of the FDRE Constitution, “on the basis of the settlement patterns, language, identity, and consent of the people.” Accordingly, WelQait returned to Western Tigray as more than 97% of the residents speak Tigirgna, and their settlement pattern, culture, history, and identity is Tigrayan. Since the start of the Tigray War, the ethnic cleansing against Tigrayans by the invading forces from Amhara virtually cleansed as many as 723,000 Tigrayans from Western Tigray according to reports from Human rights Watch and US State department report by [Blinken]. This part is factually wrong and is used as a justification to the horrible Ethnic cleansing that was conducted against Tigrayans since the start of the genocidal invasion against Tigray in 2020. " The ethnic make up of the region is widely disputed. Documentation shows that following the annexation of the area into the Tigray region, a mass effort was undertaken to re-populate the area with a majority Tigray ethnic migrants while displacing the local Amhara population.[1] Various steps were taken to dramatically change the demographic make up of the region including, a change to the official language for regional administration and teaching in public schools to Tigrigna and repossession of land from the majority Amhara farming population.[2] Notably, records going back into the 1980’s show that the region was populated predominantly by ethnic Amhara.[1] As a result of these mass efforts, the ethnic demographic of the region was dramatically altered."
Correction Please replace by the following
The ethnic make up is never contested. WelQait is historically and ethnically Tigrayan but was forcefully annexed from 1944-1990 to Gonder by Haileslassie and Dergue regimes as a deliberate strategy to weaken Tigray and cut its borders from the rest of the world. Please check the following sources about the ethnic composition, mother tongue, identity and culture of WelQait before, during, and after the forceful annexation of WelQait.
1. Before the forceful annexation of WelQait- the Italian ethnographer [Ellero] who was in Welkait in 1939-1940 before the foreceul annexation of WelQait to Gonder in 1944,Clealy states that WelQait is Tigrayan in Language, culture, and place names . Belgian researches list of 574 place names as recorded by Ellero and his translators and clearly unambiguously state that WelQait was Tigrayan before the forceful annexation in 1944.
2. During the forceful annexation of WelQait - Dergue census shows that WelQait remained Tigrayan both in Language and culture. https://www.ethiopia-insight.com/2022/11/17/amhara-nationalist-claims-over-western-tigray-are-a-smokescreen-for-ethnic-cleansing/ shows that even during the forceful annexation of WelQait to Gonder in Dergue time, the mother tongue language is shown to Tigrigna and the people are Tigrayan. Dergue officially complain about the inhabitants being Tigrayan and these more sympathetic towards TPLF is also recorded in the Dergue documents which are compiled in the evidences are given here https://www.quora.com/What-region-of-Ethiopia-does-the-area-called-Western-Tigray-rightfully-belong. Recent academic publications shows that the Dergue internal communications dated ate: 04/16/1984 GC states "TPLF has been freely roaming in Welkait and Tsegede weredas for the last five years and the people are Tigrinya speakers, the TPLF has found a fertile ground. A more robust detailed explanation isgiven here https://www.ethiopia-insight.com/2022/08/03/under-ethiopias-federal-system-western-tigray-belongs-in-tigray/
3. After the end of the forceful annexation - the census in 1994 and 2007 consistently show majority Tigrayan but an increase in percentage of Amhara residents. Tigrinya speakers were the majority in Welkait well before the emergence of the TPLF—which invalidates the assertion that TPLF needed to carry out resettlement to shift the demographics of the area in Tigray’s favor—there nonetheless was a resettlement of Tigrayans in what has become Western Tigray after the coming to power of TPLF-EPRDF. Some of the evidences are given in 1 and 2 above. The effect of these resettlement programs was negligible and that some areas in Western Tigray have actually seen an increase in the Amhara population while the number of Tigrayans decreased as can be seen from the census. This is because increased Amhara laborers influx to WelQait Humera as these areas start to demand more manpower for Sesam harvest seasons. Another reason is the relative peace and stability in WelQait and Western Tigray compared to the insecurity and kidnappings in Northern Gonder by bandits locally named Armachiho shifta “የኣርማጭሆ ሽፍታ” . Majority of these bandits from Northern Gonder were renamed "Gonder Fano" and are mainly responsible for the ethnic cleansing of Tigrayans as was proved by Human rights watch reports. - Huge POV push for the Tigray land claim. Editors need to recognize that the Tigray TPLF rulers governed the country for 27 years, implemented various land and property ownership-related "rules" and applied them widely. Thorough research on the Country's history, if necessary those published in local languages is encouraged due to misleading nature of sources published especially during the Northern Ethiopia war. It is also important to note that since the GoE removed western journalists from the country, most international media outlets were using the Tigray diaspora and related advocates as their source. Welkait Tigrinya is not from Tigray
[edit]Welkait Tigrinya is very close if not the same as Eritrean Kebessa Tigrinya. In fact, many Welkait Tigrinya speakers are partially descended from Eritrea. However, Eritrean Tigrinya do not Claim land ownership over Welkait. Tigrayans from Tigray specifically the TPLF want to claim the Land but kick out the people and replace them with Mekele Tigrayans. Welkait are whatever Welkait people say they are...and if that is Amhara (Amara) so be it..no TPLF Tigrayan supremacist can force this false "tigrayan" identity on them. Wikipedia needs to understand that there are sub-tribes of Tigray trying to force Welkait into being Tigrayan...when anyone in the region whether Amhara or Eritrean knows that Welkait are NOT Tigrayans!NewListner (talk) 09:05, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
