[edit]The article starts history with the Romans but the watchtower must be more ancient. In Aeschylus' (c.525- 455 BC) Greek play "Agamemnon" the prologue is a speech by a watchman and refers to a tower. Query whether the Mesopotamian Ziggurats served as watchtowers and whether hill forts were a predecessor.Oldbuffer (talk) 19:27, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
