is Far From Home a novel, or a short story collection?
[edit]The article indicates Far From Home is a novel; is that accurate or not? I thought that Tevis wrote only six novels, not seven as the article currently states. --Mathew5000 (talk) 11:43, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
- Fixed. Thanks. Pepso2 (talk) 13:25, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
Tevis' Wife: Jamie or Eleanora (or both)?
[edit]The article says of Tevis that "he married Jamie Griggs in 1957, and they remained together for 27 years" (presumably until Walter's death in 1984). However, the article also offers a link to the "official website" for Walter Tevis, which lists one "Eleanora Tevis" as the trustee of Walter's literary estate, and Googling "Eleanora Tevis" turns up a variety of hits in which "Eleanora Tevis" is represented as Walter's widow.
Is Jamie the same person as Eleanora (i.e. is one of those names a nickname or middle name?), or is there some other explanation? (If anyone has access to Jamie's autobiography, I'm sure it would quickly answer the question, but I don't have a copy.)
Just curious, as a grateful reader of Walter's wonderful novel Mockingbird.

- Okay, I fixed. See bottom of article text. And I certainly agree that MOCKINGBIRD is a superb novel. Pepso2 (talk) 19:45, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
- Is this really accurate? Walter married Jamie in '57 and stayed with her for 27 years -- which would have meant they split in 1984 -- and then they divorced in time for for Tevis to marry Eleanora before his death later the same year? I know this is possible, but it is unusual, and it seems that the story behind it (if known) is a relevant aspect of his biography.

- Well, I did the math also while adding references. Now I have added two more references to clarify he was married to both. I gather that Eleanora was his agent. I leave it to you if you want to email questions to her. See waltertevis.com Pepso2 (talk) 03:53, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, Pepso. That clarifies matters. I suspect emailing Eleanora would be original research, so if I decide to worry about this anymore, I'll read the Griggs autobiography and thus fill in more details on this and other aspects of Tevis' life. (Or maybe I'll more profitably spend that time chasing down a used copy of Far From Home so that I can read his short SF.)

Tevis was a tournament chess player
[edit]He had one explicit chess novel and I suggest that The Hustler was another -- I think how much the young Paul Newman resemmbled the young future world champ Fischer.--71.132.196.181 (talk) 09:12, 19 September 2009 (UTC) --Jrm2007 (talk) 09:42, 19 September 2009 (UTC)
Bibliography
[edit]I have commenced a tidy-up of the Bibliography section using cite templates. Capitalization and punctuation follow standard cataloguing rules in AACR2 and RDA, as much as Wikipedia templates allow it. ISBNs and other persistent identifiers, where available, are commented out, but still available for reference. Feel free to continue. Sunwin1960 (talk) 11:07, 5 August 2017 (UTC)
Military service
[edit]Article states that Tevis was born in 1928 and went into the military on his 17th birthday, which would have been in 1945. But it goes on to state that he was also discharged in 1945. Whilst possible this doesn't seem probable, especially given service abroad and so forth, and if right should have an explanation..? Scifiandotherthings (talk) 17:59, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
