Location
[edit]Is it possible it is set in hastings? As the theme tune refers to the A21, which runs from hastings, heading north. And as Hastings has a pier...???
- "Mr Brown Goes Off To Town On The Eight Twenty-One But He Comes Home Each Evening And He's Ready With His Gun"; the 08:21 train dear Anon, not the A21. I doubt if many commuters went to work by car in the war - there was petrol rationing. Saga City 23:32, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
- In the radio episode of Keep Young and Beautiful, Capt Mainwaring makes a call to Harrison's, a wig maker, and gives the address to deliver his hairpiece as Swallows Bank, The High Street, Walmington-On-Sea, Kent.
There had been some debate previously on this page about whether Walmington-on-Sea was in Kent or Sussex. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.193.49.104 (talk) 10:37, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
- Further to this the men wear the cap badges of the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment and in the film version of Dad's Army the police station has Kent Constabulary on the board outside. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.193.49.104 (talk) 10:43, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
- When I watched Wake Up Walmington earlier tonight there was one significant detail. At one point some sailors are having a drink in a country pub, the exact location is slightly vague, but it is presumably within a few miles of Walmington. They are heading for Dover, they are told that it is about 20 miles away. The exact setting is slightly vague and it would be a mistake to assume that it is based on a specific town. PatGallacher (talk) 22:18, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
- The location of the Warmington-on-sea platoon is Kent, as if you look at the platoon's cap badges you will see that they have Invicta on them. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.112.68.219 (talk) 16:54, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- Just to throw in another confusion - St Aldhelm is a Wessex saint, and most places named after him are in Dorset!Gymnophoria (talk) 15:38, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
I realise that the platoon wear a Kent badge, but there is the occasional mention of Eastbourne as the nearest large non-fictional town, so this issue is uncertain, and it could be OR to attempt to resolve it. PatGallacher (talk) 14:57, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
This may be a bit of OR, but in the episode Mum's Army, when he says goodbye to Mrs. Gray at the station, the train is going to Victoria, implying that Walmington is in the south east, Kent or Sussex or Hampshire. Further west it would be going to Waterloo or Paddington. PatGallacher (talk) 20:53, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
Original research
[edit]I've deleted the paragraph speculating over where the "real" Walmington is. It's nothing more than irrelevant, unsourced speculation, and reads like the drunken musings of the old, widowed bloke who sits alone in the corner of a village pub ~dom Kaos~ (talk) 17:07, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
- This line remains: "In reality, many outdoor TV scenes were filmed at Thetford, an inland town in Norfolk, thus giving no clue as to the scriptwriters' preferences." What these preferences might have been confused me until I read your comment. Can we remove that as well? Marnanel (talk) 14:35, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
Railway station - Thetford or Weybourne
[edit]We have a picture of Thetford station, along with the caption "Thetford railway station was used as Walmington-on-Sea station", yet the last paragraph of the locations section states "Weybourne Station on the preserved North Norfolk Railway (a popular heritage steam railway) was used as Walmington-on-Sea Railway Station". Did they use both at separate times? The external link confirms Weybourne was used for one episode, can anyone confirm when Thetford appeared? if not picture will be zapped.
