Truth and Reconciliation Report
[edit]The Truth and Reconciliation Report cited in this article is in the public domain and can be used here. It's important to provide objective information that accurately reflects the source, rather than polemical or editorial commentary. MaxWestEsq (talk) 14:37, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
"key architect" lead
[edit]The lead is misleading insofar as it gives the reader the immediate impression that Vital-Justin Grandin intended for the forced assimilation program that the Canadian government undertook in the residential schools. There has been back-and-forth editing of this. From the Truth and Reconciliation Report, cited in the article, the forced attendance was never Vital-Justin Grandin's intention or any part of his idea for the residential schools. In fact the opposite is documented: a consensual education, albeit one that would still be viewed as cultural genocide today. I suggest changing the lead to something more accurately reflecting the man's life. MaxWestEsq (talk) 20:02, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- The lead is there to give a very simple overview of what the page says, rather than set the tone. If you (or we) find proper third-party sources that reflect your view, then content reflecting those sources could be built in the body from them, and perhaps then be reflected in the lead. But the sources currently say that he fought very hard to ensure these were boarding schools, and rejected local institutions providing education instead. I did add into the lead that he was responsible for franco-Canadian settlements as well, in terms of anything else that can be said about him. As that is certainly notable. But for now, I think the page is pretty neutral in terms of language given the kinds of sources we can rely on and their content. I would assume older sources likely focus on differnet parts of his life, but he doesn't appear to have been notable enough over the past century writers to have focused on him very often. Troublesome Editor
[edit]is there a way to stop User:D37459N348595 from touching this page? Looking at the editing history they seem pretty adamant about censoring the article. There has been a constant battle between them and other editors and they haven't been listening to advice and consulting the talk page before deleting massive sections. - The editor in question was blocked for a week due to edit-warring, hopefully that will elicit a civil talk page response. I would love to hear what they have to say myself, as someone who has engaged with them as I am a little confused as to why they are framing a white-washing of genocidal efforts as eliminating "hate", but alas it does not look as if they are interested in volunteering their time to reach out in that way thus far. Hopefully that will change :) Quick, Spot the Quetzalcoatl! (talk) 00:21, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

Extinction
[edit]The article uses the phrase “they faced extinction”. It is unclear whether this refers to the residential schools or the indigenous peoples. Humphrey Tribble (talk) 15:21, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
