Pop culture
[edit]Should the article have some reference to the Vicia sativa's importance in popular culture? For example, it was important to the book The Mysterious Benedict Society. Bfotino (talk) 15:09, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
Lentil-shaped seeds
[edit]This mutation actually seems to have arisen in the early 1860s already. It was decribed as V. sativa f. phaeochroa by W.C.Bochkoltz in "Vicia sativa L., deren Varietäten 1. glabra (Schleich.) Ser. 2. leucosperma Ser.", Verhandlungen des Botanischen Vereins Berlin-Brandenburg 5: 166-172 (1863-1864).
At that time, it was misinterpreted as a "hybrid" (and its backcrosses) between V. sativa and lentils, because hybridization between plant species was still very little understood back then. But it is actually an example of Vavilovian mimicry: The lentil-shaped seeds were unintentionally selected by farmers, and by the early 20th century, the form had thus evolved seeds that perfectly resembled a mottled lentil in size, shape and colour. 18:22, 16 November 2022 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:908:4B33:BD80:D3A:DF67:10B:187 (talk)
Hardy plant?
[edit]Why is that said? In the article is no hint to sowing common vetch in autumn. I think it common sense, that this vetch is NOT hardy because it's killed by frost. Wolfgang Kaul (talk) 13:05, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
