Are Ironweed runners rhizomes or stolons?

[edit]

Do ironweed plants spread by rhizome or stolon? Used "runner" but directed to rhizome because the rhizome discussion mentions confusion with stolons. Is it important practically (ie for a farmer looking for info to determine if and how ironweed in his pasture needs to be controlled)? Don't know. Info about this might be useful. A google scholar search for "vernonia control" or "vernonia weed" shows a few articles from Weed Science (and similar journals) but the first hits I saw were for Vernonia altissima or other species not V. noveboracensis. Unless I'm missing something based on reading Stolon and Rhizome, we'd be better off not focusing on which word fits better, but more specific distinctions like what distance the plant will spread underground (if that is the relevant aspect).
