First gen models

For the first two generations, the nameplate was applied to right-hand drive versions of Opel Kadett

The Opel Kadett was sold in the Republic of Ireland, a right hand drive market. Some found their way into the Northern Ireland / UK market. (Now that Opel no longer sell vehicles in Japan, the Republic of Ireland is one of their few, if only, right hand drive markets).—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 81.99.92.38 (talk • contribs).

Easytronic

One, or more of the generations had the Easytronic transmission. I am fairly sure it was the Astra-G and Astra-F - can someone clarify/confirm, and add it to the article, thanks. 78.32.143.113 (talk) 10:27, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

Mk2 GTE

Merge

I would recommend this article to be merged with Opel Astra as it is the same car, just with a different name.

I was actually thinking the same but please sign your posts with three tildes (~)

I also just removed the owners clubs since they offer nothing but advertising to the article.

I would urge caution as the Vauxhall Astra existed prior to the Opel Astra and some may find this a problem. Warren (talk)

Question - is that wise with only two different names? realistically people in Europe will type the Opel Astra name and Brits will use the Vauxhall article. So are the cars now similar enough throughout the world to merge without losing a lot of valuable information? Thanks Jenova20 09:20, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

Redirects and disambiguation pages work to negate this problem. No information will be lost, the Vauxhall information will be distributed into the relevant sections at Opel Astra and Opel Kadett. I'd be sorry to see the Vauxhall Astra page being merged as it has a strong relevance in the UK, and it already links to the fuller sections of more recent Opel Astra pages. I'll concede with the majority here if that is the only option, but I offer a suggestion that the Vauxhall Astra page is copy edited to include more specific information and becomes a briefer page, and move any duplicated material to the Opel Astra/Kadett pages. Sigh, another tangled web of badge engineering :( I will read through the various Astra articles, derive a timeline of events showing the various histories and where they merge/cross/diverge, and then present it at Talk:Vauxhall_Astra#Merge. I suspect there will be no clear answer but I'll at least dig out the facts so that we're all on the same page (pun not intended). Please hold off on any final decisions for a day or two. I've ignored the American models because they were late in the game. It looks like the Astra is really a continuation of the Opel Kaddett. The Astra name was introduced by Vauxhall in the UK first (alongside the UK Opel Kaddett for a few years), then taken up by most of the world while the Kaddett name was laid to rest. Especially of note is that the early Kaddett's were designed in Germany (except possibly the Kadett C) and the first UK Astra was designed and built in Germany (production later shifting to England, Belgium, Poland and maybe others).  Stepho  talk  04:42, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

Oppose: The Vauxhall Astra has had such a long and strong presence in the United Kingdom that although it goes against my inclinations I think it should keep its own article. If it was to be merged, then it would clearly be split and then merged into Opel Kadett and Opel Astra. And since the Holden Astra has been used on such an unexpected variety of models I feel that it would be clearer and more informative to leave that badge with its own space as well. Oppose: - This is one of those (many) situations where there isn't a perfect solution, but in my view the fact that the Astra badge was used by Vauxhall for over a decade before being adopted by Opel makes the current article split the clearest and most accurate approach.Rangoon11 (talk) 19:50, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

neutral: As I said on the talk:Opel astra page it certainly would make things easyer by merging the pages for me when giving information that is relevant to both Vauxhall and Opel brands, instead of having to go back and forth putting all the information on both pages but I understand that it might create certain problems so ill leave it for whoevers in charge to sort it out. yesilikecars (talk) 11:58, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

Strong Oppose - For starters, the Astra was a Vauxhall first and an Opel second, so any redirect/disambig setup should be at the Opel article, not this one. Secondly, the fact that the Astra covered both the Opel Kadett and Astra means this should stay independent. Exactly the same should occur with the Holden Astra. Astra Mk6 1.7 Circle L engine torque figures

I'm not completely sure about this but I believe the 1.7 L diesel unit (Circle L engine) produced 221 lbs/ft (300 N.m) of torque as of 2012 as well as the previous 207 lbs/ft (280 N.m) and 192 lbs/ft (260 N.m) stated.
