Unfair criticism

[edit]

It seems to me that the criticism from proponents of corporate interests, GM etc is unfair and prejudiced, and lacking in scientific basis. 51.148.176.21 (talk) 20:48, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How exactly does this section's concern apply to the criticisms of Michael Specter, Keith Kloor, Stewart Brand, Birendra Nayak? These are investigative journalists and writers, who themselves are no friend of corporate America. They lodge complaints against Shiva based on her pseudoscientific evidence-base, her plagiarism, and her unethical claims. Hardly "corporate interests."
Brand, for example, was a fixture in the hippie circles of the 60s and 70s, engaging in Acid Tests, and hung out with Ken Kesey. How exactly is this guy a picture of "corporate interests?" He's just not an extremist. if that makes him a corporatist, then basically everyone but Shiva is, too. — Shibbolethink ( ) 21:58, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
True but actually this section reads as a vindication of GM proponents against what sound like hysterical and irrational fears of Shiva, and makes her sound like a bit of a naive dupe of western critics of GMOs--when the actual context is the contemporary (2000-2006/7) debate about Disaster Capitalism and terminator seeds -- an article linked to here but badly in need of updating, since it ends before the time when GMOs were in fact spread very widely (India and Brazil, as noted). Vandana Shiva in Perspective

[edit]

I'm not sure how to correct or modify this, but it seems to me that Vandana Shiva, while she was definitely criticized for misstatements and possibly even benefiting financially from her advocacy against Monsanto and the GMO folks, is still part of a larger context of work and analysis of "disaster capitalism", sketched in Naomi Klein's *Shock Doctrine*, and now much better understood and represented in Ashley Dawson's *Extinction* and elsewhere. I understand why inserting refs to Naomi Klein in the "critiques" section doesn't work; perhaps there needs to be another section that clarifies the influence that Shiva has had, and her place in the "disaster capitalism" critique more broadly? Because even if the crits of her are legit, those specific crits are sort of all internal to the GMOs-pushed-onto-unwilling-global-south debate and movement, of which Shiva is despite all critiques still a recognized part.

Does anyone have thoughts on why or why not a "context" section for her should be added? Meerkat77 (talk) 22:41, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Part of WP:SYNTH is that we don't engage in our own personal analyses, so discussion would really need to be focused on what sources say directly about Shiva. Part of the challenge though is because of the WP:FRINGE aspects of Shiva, we do have to be careful about considering what is really WP:DUE. So it really depends on what in a source is being proposed for use first before figuring out what might be mentioned. KoA (talk) 03:30, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
