Change of Chancellor

Hello everyone and Page Watchers.

I am employed by Global University Systems (GUS) - the company that owns University Canada. I would like to extend a hand to the Wikipedia community in an effort to help improve this page and ensure that relevant, noteworthy and correct (sourced) information is present. My Conflict of Interest is that I am an employee of GUS - I seek to be fully compliant with the COI policies and hope to work with all editors for the improvement of the page. Following making my edit suggestions - I shall declare my COI on the WP:COIN page.

I am requesting that the name of the Chancellor be edited from "John Winter" to "Mitchell Gropper" [1]

This is all I would like to have added at this time. I feel this addition is non-promotional and correcting information. If editors should have any issues with this, please know I hope to understand so as to improve the quality of the page and to help it develop - so all feedback is appreciated! Sincerely, MrAttempt (talk) 16:17, 17 May 2018 (UTC)

IRCC Work-Permit Information

Hello everyone and Page Watchers,

I am employed by Global University Systems (GUS) - the company that owns University Canada West.

I am requesting the following addition be made to the Academics section: "Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) issues work-permits to students upon completion of UCW degrees." [1]

This edit consists of noteworthy information that is relevant to the page's subject, is non-promotional and is sourced to an independent/external site.

@Ronz: - Would you be able to help and advise with this?

All advice and efforts are appreciated. With thanks - MrAttempt (talk) 09:16, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

a. This is not particularly "noteworthy information". Literally 100s of Canadian post-secondary institutions are on the Canadian government's "Designated learning institutions" list for a post-graduation work permit—40 in British Columbia alone.
b. As phrased, the proposed edit is misleading. It implies that the IRCC automatically issues work permits to graduates of designated institutions, including UCW. This is not the case.
c. Per the above, this strikes me as a promotional addition. However, I'd also like an opinion from Ronz.

Hi @Voceditenore:. Thanks for the input. Perhaps the phrasing could be changed to: ""Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) issues work-permits to student applicants upon completion of UCW degrees."? Thanks again - MrAttempt (talk) 14:50, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
Your suggestion is equally misleading. At most one can say "On completion of UCW degrees, students may be eligible to apply for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada work permits". But that is really beside the point. This is neither noteworthy nor unique to UCW. It is utterly commonplace and, as I said, applies to well over two hundred of Canadian tertiary institutions. Nor is this factoid mentioned in the WP articles for far more prestigious Canadian universities, e.g. Queen's University, Simon Fraser University, McGill University, etc.. In my opinion, its sole purpose is to attract foreign students to UCW, and as such is promotional. The university can advertise this potential eligibility in their prospectus but not here. However, I'll wait a couple of days for opinions from other editors before explicitly declining this request. Voceditenore (talk) 15:35, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
Pure WP:SOAP, no context, misleading. --Ronz (talk) 16:10, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
In light of Ronz's comment, I am marking this request as declined. I also strongly suggest that no further edit requests of this nature be submitted. They are a waste of volunteer editors' time. Voceditenore (talk) 16:27, 24 May 2018

Hi everyone! Thank you for your insights. I will continue to work on non-promotional information that helps to develop and improve this page. MrAttempt (talk) 10:31, 25 May 2018 (UTC)

New Associate of Arts Degree

Hello everyone

I am employed by Global University Systems (GUS) - the company that owns UCW.

The edit I am requesting is for the addition of the following (or an alternative wording of) sentence to the 'Academics' section: "In 2018, UCW launched an Associate of Arts degree - focusing on core skills."

This can be sourced - with greater details - via this PIE News articles: https://thepienews.com/news/ucw-aa-degree/

I am requesting this edit as it updates the page with correct encyclopedic information in a non-promotional fashion via an independent source.

If this is deemed inappropriate for Wikipedia then please let me know - I'll appreciate your advice greatly.

With thanks, MrAttempt (talk) 12:28, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

I have added the Associate of Arts to the list of degree programs on offer in the "Academics" section—minus the blurb. The Pie News item is virtually a verbatim rehash of UCW's own press release. As such, the fact that UCW offers this degree doesn't merit further commentary. Voceditenore (talk) 13:17, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
I agree. Briefest mention is probably expected, as has been done. --Ronz (talk) 15:10, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

Thank you both for your time and for adding this to the page. With thanks - MrAttempt (talk) 08:17, 16 July 2018 (UTC)

Hindustan Times Article

My Conflict of Interest is that I am employed by Global University Systems (GUS) - the company that owns University Canada West. I seek to be fully compliant with the COI policies and hope to work with all editors for the improvement of the page.

I feel the structure of the article comes across as misleading. The History section ends with the Hindustan Times article (which is also a single news piece and largely opinion-based) and that GUS then acquired the school in 2015.

There is then the Campus and Governance sections, followed by the Academics section which goes someway to redefine the progress of the school (such as being accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs in 2017). The History section ends with a negative piece of news, whilst the exemplary update of improvement (ACBSP accreditation) is distant from the relevant section it pertains to.

I am asking for a re-positioning of the relevant Academics information so that it is included in the History section and helps to inform about the school.

With thanks - MrAttempt (talk) 16:16, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

As best that I recall: Problem is there's so little written about the school that it's hard to create a coherent narrative on much of anything.
What historical information do we have about accreditation, and are any of the sources independent? --Ronz (talk) 16:42, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

Hi @Ronz:. This exists on accreditation: https://www.acbsp.org/members/default.asp?view=0&id=18775599&pubview= as is used in the Academics section.

This same website also holds this (https://www.acbsp.org/page/accreditation) page which states: "The accreditation focuses on recognizing teaching excellence, determining student learning outcomes, and a continuous improvement model. ACBSP’s student-centered teaching and learning approach, which is measured and analyzed for quality, ensures that students gain the right skills from their educational investment. Institutions with programs accredited by ACBSP are committed to continuous improvement that ensures their business program will give students the skills employers want."

I feel that this should feature, in part, in the History section as it goes some way to update on the University since the GUS acquisition and the Hindustan Times article. Whilst not reported in media, the improvement of the school is technically stated by the accrediting body via their actual accrediting of the school. Would this be acceptable?

With thanks MrAttempt (talk) 16:59, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

@MrAttempt: That information pertains to the Accreditation Council for Business Schools & Programs, and as such, would be apropos for that article — not the one on Canada West. More to the point of what Ronz is asking for, are there any sources which are independent of both Canada West and the ACBSP that mention one garnering the accreditation of the other? Another point: The accreditation criteria state the following:

ACBSP accredits business programs. ACBSP does not accredit the institution, only the business programs offered at the institution. Most businesses and universities reviewing transcripts and accepting degrees base their decisions on institutional accreditation. Program accreditation from ACBSP without institutional accreditation may not be considered sufficient when accepting degrees or credits for transfer.[1]

I don't see where your proposed language clarifies this difference. Please advise.  Spintendo  17:26, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

Hi @Spintendo:. I see the accreditation of the UCW Business programmes by the ACBSP as a demonstration of UCW improvements. Considering that the article is given great prevalence and denotes the opinions of 30 students (etc.), this accreditation of the business programmes should be included in the history so as to reflect the state of the school. It is not accrediting the entirety of UCW, but it is certainly a statement of improvement following the GUS acquisition of 2015. With thanks MrAttempt (talk) 13:52, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

The accreditation of the business programmes is of particular note as the MBA is mentioned in the Hindustan article - which is prevalent in the History section. The improvement of said degree should, I feel, be included too.

I would phrase simply as follows: "In 2017, UCW business programmes received accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools & Programs." This would then be followed by this link: https://www.acbsp.org/members/default.asp?view=0&id=18775599&pubview=

This would update the History section since the acquisition by GUS.

With thanks - MrAttempt (talk) 11:42, 5 December 2018 (UTC)

I have updated the "Academics" section with the date of accreditation by ACBSP and clarified that this accreditation is for its business degrees, not for the entire institution. However, that information does not belong in the "History" section. It might have if a completely independent news source had written an article about UCW's improvement since its troubled history under the ownership of Eminata and had cited the accreditation as a sign of this. However, nothing significant has appeared in the mainstream press about UCW since 2014. (UCW remains a very small institution catering overwhelmingly to foreign students.) Nor is such accreditation particularly noteworthy per se. I have added a slight update on UCW since its acquisition by GUS to the "History" section with a reference which is mainly useful for noting the composition of its student body. Voceditenore (talk) 14:15, 5 December 2018 (UTC)

Hi @Voceditenore: Thank you for your considerations and actions - they are much appreciated. Allow me to ask; would you say there is information missing from this page? Similar to acquiring an image of The Music Box - such as we spoke of on the LCCM page? Obviously; nothing of a promotional nature. MrAttempt (talk) 16:52, 5 December 2018 (UTC)

MrAttempt, in my view there's no significant information about the current incarnation of UCW that is missing. The content is commensurate with its current size, status, and dearth of coverage in independent sources. However, I have added some more material to the "History" section concerning an unsuccessful attempt by the university to start a Fine Arts degree in 2008—a fascinating saga which I will later expand on in Victoria College of Art.
