Original text and English translation
[edit]The Italian text is taken from Score and libretto at Indiana University. This source does not include the last line "Si può morir! Si può morir d'amor", which is however heard in most performances of the romanza. The English translation is somewhat unsatisfactory with regard to punctuation and shows an incorrect rendering of such Italian words as "sì"="yes" and the impersonal pronoun "si"="one". It certainly needs emendation where the original has been completely misunderstood. The lines "Un solo istante i palpiti / del suo bel cor sentir! / I miei sospir confondere / per poco a' suoi sospir!" express Nemorino’s wish, not something he has just experienced (the infinitive "sentir" misunderstood as "sentii", 1st pers. sing. pt. indic.). - It's a good thing you mentioned that. I can't speak for everyone, but I find it despicable when libretti omit commonly included words. On the plus side, it's largely a First-World-type problem. – AndyFielding (talk) 07:22, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
