Proof of SOFAR channel

Saluda is of note as the vessel receiving the first proof of the SOFAR channel that became of major importance to later Navy developments. From the abstract of J. Walter Munk's "Acoustics and Ocean Dynamics":

Ewing and Worzel had listened aboard the Saluda at 26°N, 76°W to 4-lb charges being detonated in the sound channel at distances up to 900 miles. They had heard, for the first time, the characteristic signature of a SOFAR (Sound Fixing and Ranging) transmission building up to its climactic finale
