- It's odd how this time interval is missing when in fact this was the same time there was a hurricane that headed for Guam I forget if it was Agnes or what the name was. It prompted the 602 to head toward Peal Harbor and the Abraham Lincoln 602 almost sank. While underway with the Gold crew heading toward Pearl Harbor from Guam in 1978 aprox. August, they wanted to snorkel. An order given out by the then OOD a LTJG who gave the order to approach snorkel depth but we were not at snorkel depth (aprox 86ft) we were at 287ft and took on sea water through the diesel. So since we had no diesel engine and the water started coming into the engine room it started to affect the after trim (the level)of the ship and it went from 68 to a depth I cannot write in about 60 seconds in reverse. The pressure on the rear main seal was so intense water came in through that seal into the lower level engine room and shorted out two of the three high packs. (high pressure air compressors). If it were not for the Commander coming to the bridge when he did we could have swam with the fishes for real. That was her 50th or 51st patrol.
