Location

[edit]

Unclear where the Fir is located. Has been listed within List of National Historic Landmarks in New York, but NHL nomination study states Fir is in operation off Washington and Oregon states.doncram 05:17, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Was eventually identified definitively to be in California, article updated, NHL lists updated. doncram (talk) 17:32, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

The gallery section has grown out of control in this article. I went through all of the pictures yesterday, added an appropriate category to them in Commons, added a Commons Cat template, and then trimmed the less encyclopedic images. I also captioned the remaining images. I did all of this so the article follows WP:Galleries.

Another editor came along and reverted the edits, so now we enter the WP:BRD cycle. I am not convinced how this collection of images: 1). Adds to the reader's overall understanding of the article. and 2). That several of the images are themselves not of a quality to be encyclopedic. Many lack context, and none of them are captioned.

I would appreciate feedback as we seek consensus to move forward. Cheers. EricSerge (talk) 13:02, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Concur. Don't need the clutter of so many images. I've reverted once again to restore all of proper changes lost when Editor Jefflayton reverted my last edit. I've made further changes and improvements and changed the gallery to use the {{gallery}} template where I've included {{commons category-inline}} as a footer. That should be sufficient. Editor Jefflayton: leave it alone.

I know the owner of Fir (Curt Lind) and the person responsible (Thomas Young) for upkeep, restoration, maintenance, etc. They are fine with the images. In fact, the Fir and the pier 38 legal battle are about to get a lot of media attention soon - so the more on the wikipedia page, the better. — Preceding unsigned comment added by A free people ought...to be armed (talkcontribs) 15:27, 3 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have moved Editor A free people ought...to be armed's post to the bottom of this topic in keeping with Wikipedia talk page common convention.
The issue isn't whether or not Fir's owner and maintainer a are "fine with the images". The issue is the article's compliance with Wikipedia's gallery guideline. Both Editor EricSerge and I have asserted that the inclusion of so many images does not comply with the guideline. I, for one, do not find the possibility of media attention a sufficiently convincing argument to warrant disregard of the guideline.
All of the images are available through the {{commonscat}} links that both Editor EricSerge and I added to the article.
Editor A free people ought...to be armed's most recent revert should be reverted.

Per our discussion here and the brief discussion at User talk:Jefflayton, I have scaled back the gallery. If Fir is invloved in a legal battle, then once this is found in a reliable source, independent of the subject, then I welcome that addition to the page. In the meantime it should be remembered that Wikipedia is not a soapbox or means of promotion. If you want to improve the article, find more reliable sources to improve coverage. Cheers. Thanks Guys. Sorry again as I have never used wiki, but am learning. Also, thanks for putting a link to the photos. Can we reference the "motherfir" website I included since it was done by the owner? — Preceding unsigned comment added by A free people ought...to be armed (talkcontribs) 17:22, 5 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
