General on the N3s
[edit]This was a fairly obscure type, designed in specific response to British request for a coastal ship that could be fueled by British coal rather than imported oil. The type was considered particularly suitable for shallow and undeveloped ports with many ending up in Africa and South Asia. The U.S. took a number of the oil fired design, with a number going to the Southwest Pacific Area for similar reasons. The N3-M-A1 was completely different, in appearance as well as propulsion and a number of PD photos are available. Good PD photos of the N3-S versions are more difficult to locate.
