EP or album?

Quick question, is Tyla is a self-titled EP that is to be included in Tyla album? I am asking because coming to think of it, "On and On", "Truth or Dare", and "Butterflies" are not singles but they are songs. See some of the following sources I stumbled upon: [1], [2], [3], [4]. dxneo (talk) 22:07, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

By defintion an EP and album, appear to be different, subjects. As per [5], furthermore only the Water, remix is included in the EP, not the original version of the song which presumably will be included in, the album. In my opinion, I think that the EP could possibly as an alternative be a stand-alone, article. Qaqaamba (talk) 03:41, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
Ss112, your take on this? dxneo (talk) 15:30, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
That just looks like one of those digital EPs that's cobbled together by labels for streaming services to collect all the songs in one place so that the artist gets more streams. That being said, I am really not a Tyla fan (I only created the article for "Water" because it was a popular charting song, I'm not interested in her broadly), so I don't know, but regardless of the existence of the EP, this article is for the full-length album that's coming out. Ss112 15:50, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
Ss112, I'm also not a fan, so would it inappropriate to create a standalone article for the EP? (There are multiple reliable sources on it). dxneo (talk) 15:58, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
If you think it's notable enough then that's up to you, but personally I don't see the point as its coverage is just going to be subsumed by the album and all five songs on the digital EP are included on the eventual album. (Btw, I have pings turned off, so tagging me doesn't mean I get anything.) As an aside, at this early stage it looks like Tyla may be going the way of other TikTok hits. One big hit but the public don't seem to care about the follow-ups (e.g. "Truth or Dare" and "On and On" haven't charted on anything but component or genre charts), and the album just ends up being a blip on the radar. By all means, I don't care if I'm proven wrong, but that's why I wouldn't be worried about starting an article for the EP. I don't even know why you bothered with "On and On" tbh. Ss112 16:09, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
Yes, it is a "genre charting" song but it was featured on a A COLORS SHOW and it made the news, even "Truth or Dare" can get a standalone article too. मल्ल, your take on this? dxneo (talk) 15:41, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
Sorry I'm not that familiar on notability requirements for songs or EPs. मल्ल (talk) 03:29, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello Abcdehe, in addition to what I've addressed here, would you please state the reason to why you removed "(styled in all caps)" and mainly why you think "On and On", "Truth or Dare", and "Butterflies" are singles where as they are clearly labeled as songs on their articles (and infoboxes)? You started off with a nonsensical edit of removing cited content and said it was a mistake when it was addressed and threatened to take me to Ani. I'd hate for this to become an edit over something so simple. Until consensus is reached, please do not mark the songs are singles Thank you. dxneo (talk) 20:19, 24 January 2024 (UTC)

Thank you for your message. "Styled in all caps" was removed per MOS:TITLECAPS. And as I've already mentioned multiple times, "On and On", "Truth or Dare" and "Butterflies" were added as promotional singles by a different user prior to me editing the article. When my edits were made, I never removed the word promotional from the format, making your narrative of me thinking that those songs are singles false. Please view the page's history and find the user who added those songs as promotional singles, and chase them up on that instead.
Secondly, "removing cited content" is not what I was doing in my edit, if you are talking about my edits on Tyla (album). I removed one source by mistake and that was readded once I had realised my wrongdoing. But there was no content attached to that source which was removed, so no removal actually occured. Abcdehe (talk) 20:25, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
Abcdehe, great. To make this short, looking at the present state of the article, what grammatic errors are there to fix beside the all caps? dxneo (talk) 20:29, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
There are no errors at this time, as I've just undone your edit and switched it back to what it was before. Abcdehe (talk) 20:30, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
Like I said before, I hate engaging in edit wars, mentioning Tyla whereas the title of the article is Tyla in the lead is not right, that "It" was fine. ALSO that "currently scheduled...", that "currently" is not supposed to be there. Anyway, happy editing. dxneo (talk) 20:35, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
"Currently" actually is supposed to be there, because the date is not confirmed and could be changed with little notice. Anyway, happy editing. Abcdehe (talk) 20:37, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
The date is confirmed, check your Apple Music or any cited source. Anyway, thanks you the best. dxneo (talk) 20:39, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
Again, it could be changed with little notice. Anyway, thanks you the best. Abcdehe (talk) 20:39, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
And it was. Everybodyyy (talk) 19:50, 7 March 2024 (UTC)
No cap. dxneo (talk) 20:32, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

Tyla (album)

You reverted the edits I made to the Tula (album) article. Care to explain why you did this? If you don't have a valid reason, best believe I will undo your edit when I get to a computer.  Versace1608  Wanna Talk? 23:23, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

Hello Versace1608, please do tag/mention the user who rollbacked your edit(s) for a quicker response. dxneo (talk) 13:20, 8 March 2024 (UTC)
I apologize for confusing you with another editor. I thought you were the one who reverted my edit, and just realized that it was a different person.  Versace1608  Wanna Talk? 14:50, 8 March 2024 (UTC)

Record label(s)

As cited with reliable sources in the article, most sources and streaming platforms state that the album was released through Fax Records and Epic Records. However, the UK R&B Albums Chart number ones states that the labels are Since 93/RCA, and so does this aggregate score. Could it be that the album was released to some regions through RCA and some through Epic? Consensus would be helpful and will be used under the release history section. dxneo (talk) 16:02, 30 March 2024 (UTC)

@Dxneo: As per this article, she’s signed to Fax+Epic in the US and then Since93+RCA in the UK. cybertrip👽 ( 💬📝) 17:51, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
Thank you Cybertrip, is it safe to add the information under the release history? And would it be safe to also add it on her other songs? dxneo (talk) 22:35, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
@Dxneo: I honestly don’t think so. Fax/Epic is her main record deal as they represent her here in her home country as well as most other parts of the world. I think Since93/RCA can go in the infobox of Tyla (South African singer) though under the “Label” parameter. cybertrip👽 ( 💬📝) 09:03, 31 March 2024 (UTC)
Looking at Cardi B's Invasion of Privacy, it was released by Atlantic Records but distributed through Warner Music Japan in Japan, see the release history, I think the same should apply here as well. Cybertrip, thank you for helping me and pointing me in the right direction, I'm grateful. dxneo (talk) 15:18, 1 April 2024 (UTC)

Content and writing

Hello AlNahyan, I noticed you've recently been doing a great job by re-writing content on this article. However, few moments later Cybertrip would come to undo some of the edits and re-write the whole thing again (well at least most of it). I was thinking it would be best to discuss your contributions here before proceeding to removing (cited) content. Thank you. dxneo (talk) 01:43, 7 April 2024 (UTC)

Oh oops. Sorry for undoing your reversion (I didn't see the notification) I feel that a lot of Cybertrip's edits were overly journalistic in nature, which shouldn't really be happening on a Wikipedia article (imo.) But I'm open to hear other people's thoughts on this. AlNahyan (talk) 02:22, 7 April 2024 (UTC)

Should radio date or album date be used for Art?

The song went to Italian radio on 12 April and there is nothing about a 22 March release. 96.43.189.203 (talk) 15:42, 8 April 2024 (UTC)

Hello, the information you just presented has already been added here. For clarity, the song was primarily released in 22 March 2024 with the album. dxneo (talk) 15:55, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
The song was never released though along with the album and it is not even in the release history either. The song was simply given a music video but it is not a single, not until it impacts radio. 96.43.189.203 (talk) 17:36, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
Looking at the release history, it was sent to radio in Italy by Sony Music on 12 April 2024. Honestly, I never thought the song was a single when it was released on 22 March with the album, when I created the article it was formatted as song not single then Cybertrip changed it and I don't know why, I then asked him here why he thought "Art" was a single, see his reply. dxneo (talk) 18:53, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
Radio date is safer as it is in the release history whereas the album release date is not. Can we see what @Cybertrip has to say about it? 96.43.189.203 (talk) 15:27, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
@96.43.189.203 and Dxneo: Music journalists called the song a single before it was sent to radio so I just assumed it was, but yes I agree that it is safer to go with the radio date. cybertrip👽 ( 💬📝) 17:12, 9 April 2024 (UTC)

GA

Hi @Dxneo: good on you for nominating this article. I'm unfortunately quite busy with academics to help can def give suggestions if you'd like a successful review! On first glance I think it's missing something like a "Music and lyrics" section, and probably needs more info in the "Background and release" and "Commercial performance" sections. Feel free to use the juicy info from the interviews I've linked above, it'll be very useful. Also just to point out a small technical issue: the citations in the "Commercial performance" section are WP:DUPREFs of those in the "Charts" section. Best of luck with the nomination :) cybertrip👽 ( 💬📝) 06:22, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

Thank you Cybertrip, I'm now working on it. Although I do not really think the sources on this talk really helps that, I'm willing to reuse the sources cited in the Critical reception section instead as I think they are more detailed, thoughts on that? I have used references from the Charts section twice because they are template-generated and therefore cannot be reused. Another thing, do I have use audio files also? I've once heard file have to be discussed but I've never came across a discussion of that sort. Please do reach out. dxneo (talk) 09:24, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
@Dxneo: While album reviews are partial and opinionated, they can be used for specific details such as genres and instruments used (i.e. NME says "Jump" is a dancehall song). The auto-generated references can and must be reused, using the "refname=" parameter (I've done this edit to show you how). Audio files don't need to be discussed but they usually must be used to support a claim or idea (e.g. this Doja sample supports the paragraph about the album having "disco" and "funk"). cybertrip👽 ( 💬📝) 19:34, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
I can't thank you enough Cybertrip you the best. I'll work on the duprefs now, and the media file(s) and I'll alert you when I'm done. Also, I noticed you rewrote the lead but forgot to reference it on the body but I think I have covered it. Thank you for everything. dxneo (talk) 20:38, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
Hello Cybertrip, thoughts? dxneo (talk) 15:36, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

'Jump' for next single?

It's highly likely as that has a bunch of famous artists like Skillibeng and Gunna so maybe? It's also been quite popular and getting some love so we'll just have to wait and see. This0k (talk) 19:42, 2 April 2024 (UTC)

This0k, I am actually working on "Jump" since it charted and it is getting more streams by the day, but it's a song that never headlined anything or at least I haven't seen such sources. For now if I try to publish the article it will rely on the album reviews and charts for survival which might not be quite right. Thoughts? dxneo (talk) 20:21, 2 April 2024 (UTC)
I made the page. It has reliable citations but is a stub right now. This0k (talk) 22:23, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
Seems it got deleted. @Cybertrip may I ask why the article can't be created. I know I made it as a single article at first by accident but if made as a song article it should be okay. This0k (talk) 21:07, 4 May 2024 (UTC)

Excessive audio samples

Hi Dxneo, just a suggestion because I'd really like to see you get this article to GA status :) The Non-free content guideline advises against "an excessive number of short audio clips in a single article" let alone any audio clips at all (unless "omission would be detrimental to that understanding"). I would suggest that one is enough to get your point about genres across without cluttering the page and breaching copyright rules. cybertrip👽 ( 💬📝) 18:09, 28 May 2024 (UTC)

Thank you Cybertrip, I will remove it now now. I was taking reference from The Marshall Mathers LP. dxneo (talk) 18:19, 28 May 2024 (UTC)

Release label(s)

Cybertrip, I think you were wrong here when you said, and I quote "Epic Records is a subsidiary of Sony Music; and this edit gives the false impression that the album was released on streaming platforms everywhere except South Africa." First of all, yes Epic is a subsidiary of Sony but it does not take any credit for Epic's work. Sony distributes music for Epic, and Fax is a management company (with respect to Tyla). I have gone through multiple similar articles such as Invasion of Privacy, only the LP was released in Japan by Warner Music Italy, does it give false impression that the album was released on streaming platforms everywhere except Italy? The release history says it was released in various countries/regions and it does not specify which regions were excluded. Therefore, my point is, Tyla LP and vinyl were released in South Africa by Sony Music South Africa and track 13 was replaced by "Water (Marshmello remix)" on the vynil version. Any objections before I go on and add the information? dxneo (talk) 19:07, 6 June 2024 (UTC)

Hi Dxneo. The Japan row in Invasion of Privacy implies that the CD there came out a few days later than other countries, but the album was still available to stream in Japan when it came out initially. The label part doesn't really matter in that specific case since its merely pointing out the difference in dates. If you go forward with your edit I suggest that that you say "CD • digital download • streaming • vinyl", since all those methods were available in South Africa on 22 March. cybertrip👽 ( 💬📝) 07:10, 7 June 2024 (UTC)

@Dxneo: i'll review this. 750h+ 23:53, 9 June 2024 (UTC)

1. Well-written

lead
  • 22 March 2024 through Fax, and Epic Records. the comma isn't needed
  • Production and songwriting on the album was spearheaded by change "was" to "were".
  • However, multiple dates were cancelled due to injury. remove "However". Change "injury" to "injuries"
  • with many critics praising the versatility of music genres featured. add "the" before "music genres".
background and release
  • While speaking on the album's sound prior to its release change "prior to" to "before"
  • and that it would be primarily be "popiano", a blend of the amapiano and pop genres. remove the first "be".
  • submission date in order to collaborate with the Nigerian singer Tems on the song "No.1". change "in order to" to "to" for conciseness.
  • in Portland, Jamaica. unlink "Jamica"; per MOS:GEOLINK, only the smaller territorial unit should be linked.
composition and lyrics
  • is a 41 seconds recording that plays ==> "is a 41-second recording that plays"
  • with Tyla's vocals flactuating between the low "fluctuating" is spelt wrong.
  • the forth song in the album, is described as a slab "fourth" is spelt wrong
  • It features Tyla's smooth whispered vocals and synths with aspect of sadness add "the" before "aspect".
promotion
  • conclude on 28 May 2024 in the Minneapolis Minneapolis is a city; the article "the" is not needed
  • was later cancelled due to an injury that the singer suffered prior to the "prior to" ==> "before"
  • she did pop-up shop appearances in London and Johannesburg in order to promote the record. "in order to" ==> "to"
singles
  • Merge the first paragraph with the second one; single-sentence paragraphs generally aren't wanted.
  • A live performance of "On and On" on the German music performance platform ColorsxStudios was released onto YouTube YouTube should be linked and change "onto" to "on".
  • streaming platforms a day prior to the release of the digital EP Tyla. "prior to" ==> "before".
critical reception
  • afrobeats, amapiano, pop, and R&B, while still remaining "true to her roots. remove the comma that follows "pop".
  • while still remaining "true to her roots." remove "still".
  • on an album where "where forward motion is a recurring metaphor" remove one of the "where"s.
  • began her review noting that on the album, Tyla "flexes her fidelity to pop-R&B" and that the album "pulses with amapiano’s log-drum heartbeat". change the second "album" to "it".
  • "shows she’s up to the challenge", labeling her the most "effective ambassador" in South African English, it is "labelling" not "labeling"
All  Done. dxneo (talk) 03:37, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
I did one minor copyedit, but the prose part looks fine. Pass 750h+ 03:43, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
commercial performance

2. Verifiable with no original research

  • Are Breakroom Africa, DanceHallMag, the journalist dj, SlikourOnLife and EarOne reliable? Spotchecks performed on 13, 30, 51, and 56. Like the previous nomination, there are YouTube source but they are published by reliable sources. Earwig finds no obvious problems. 750h+ 03:41, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
Breakroom Africa is most certainly reliable as it's information usually checks out. I've never used DancehallMag before, but it has been used over 250 times on en-wiki per dancehallmag.com HTTPS links HTTP links. Content on the journalistdj matches that of slikouronlife which has been used over 165 times on en-wiki slikouronlife.co.za HTTPS links HTTP links slikouronlife has been a news source for music for as long as I can remember, hosted by Slikour of Skwatta Kamp who sometimes interviews the musicians. Lastly, EarOne is indeed a reliable source, mostly used for radio dates. It is cited on a featured article "Your Power". dxneo (talk) 04:07, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
I think slikouronlife and/or the journalistdj sources can be replaced, if that's what you're asking. dxneo (talk) 04:12, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
Honestly I think I'm fine with the source quality then. Source review pass. 750h+ 05:05, 10 June 2024 (UTC)

3. Broad

It's a long article. Comparing it to other album articles it seems broad, and it's pretty long for a new album so I believe this is a broadness pass. 750h+ 05:16, 10 June 2024 (UTC)

4. Neutral

5. Stable

6. Illustrated

All images have WP:ALT text. All four images are appropriately licensed, with one fair use image showing the album cover.

Verdict

@Dxneo: unless you have any other comments then i'd be happy to pass this for WP:GA status. 750h+ 05:16, 10 June 2024 (UTC)

750h+ Thank you for taking this review, please proceed. dxneo (talk) 05:24, 10 June 2024 (UTC)

Track listing

According to Sony Music, "To Last" was replaced with "Water (Marshmello remix)" on the vynil version of the album. However, according to eBay's Vinyl Turquoise Blue With Signed Insert, "No. 1" was replaced. Due to an ongoing conflict against an IP user, I'm here seeking clear consensus. dxneo (talk) 03:21, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

Even merchbar’s site is glitched and says it has both No. 1 and To Last. Just use the physical product’s track list details or even Tyla’s posts about her vinyl release. 47.223.58.232 (talk) 03:32, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
I see this IP has been blocked for 6 months in the past. My guess is that it was because of this behavior as they have had few warnings on their talk. dxneo (talk) 04:10, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
I wasn’t blocked for 6 months lol, it was an accidental flag that they subsequently undid. I edited while going to Starbucks and it noticed both IPs for the use. I’m literally the one who told you to come to my talk page this isn’t a “gotcha”, I’m an open book ask me what you want.
Also thanks for answering about Tyla. Guess we figured out several vinyl sites have errors in their tracklists for her. Labels are so cheap sometimes 😂 47.223.58.232 (talk) 04:21, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
Funny guy. Okay Trevor Noah, the blocklog says otherwise. I'm just gonna seek consensus here before I move on to address Peer review issues. Just so you know, this is a good article, meaning it was fact checked. I noticed you even tweaked content about the singles. dxneo (talk) 05:14, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

Unreferenced material

Hello Kamo0606, any reason why you did not reference the content you added here? Honestly, I don't know how I did not notice that. dxneo (talk) 17:27, 23 August 2024 (UTC)

The song literally exits, you can listen to it right now and confirm that for yourself. However, considering how dumb this system works, I'll remove what I've added. Kamo0606 (talk) 16:07, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
We all know that there is a Travis Scott remix of "Water" but all we asking for is a source. It's not that difficult. The system is not dumb, everything must be verifiable. dxneo (talk) 20:55, 31 August 2024 (UTC)

"Breathe Me"

This0k, according to Rolling Stone, The Source and so on, "Breathe Me" is indeed the fifth single off the studio album. 102.164.1.20 (talk) 10:43, 4 September 2024 (UTC)

Okay. Feel free to re-add it then. This0k (talk) 02:36, 7 September 2024 (UTC)

Informal peer review

As requested on my talk, a peer review by someone who is completely unfamiliar with the topic, and for whom English is not a native language ;)

Lead
  • I'd first like to know what the topic and style is, before a load of stars whose names tell me nothing.
Done dxneo (talk) 03:00, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
  • I wonder if collaborators who have no article are lead material.
Record producers like Sammy SoSo contributed a lot to the album. I really do think he's worth mentioning after writing over half of it. dxneo (talk) 03:00, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
  • "The Tyla Tour was announced, some dates of which were cancelled due to injuries." - I don't see encyclopedic relevance of the cancellations.
Meaning? Should I removed or improve? dxneo (talk) 03:00, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
  • If the versatility is all that can be said as an example of "critical acclaim" I think we could go without any. Perhaps two more, and more specific?
Please elaborate. dxneo (talk) 03:00, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
  • (added after reading the rest) It's not obvious to me how "lyrical themes include empowerment and relationships" is a summary of the composition and lyrics section.
After going through the Composition section, I would say it's an R&B album as it talks a lot about love and relationships. As for empowerment and such, songs like "Truth or Dare" are what was summarised. Any suggestions? dxneo (talk) 03:00, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
Infobox
  • Coming from Classical music where children without an article don't get room in their parents infobox, I keep being astonished how many names without articles get into studios and producers.
Haha, maybe that's how they will get articles too. dxneo (talk) 03:00, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
Background ...
  • What's Kooldrink?
The guy who produced "Getting Late". Funny name huh? dxneo (talk) 03:00, 9 September 2024 (UTC)

Composition ...

  • Why is amapiano linked here, instead of the previous section?
Done dxneo (talk) 03:00, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
  • "kickstart with a raw and proudly South African sound" would be something I'd like to read in the lead.*
Done dxneo (talk) 03:00, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
  • what's "old-school R&B"?
I was following the Billboard source. Suggestion? dxneo (talk) 03:00, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
  • An explanation of what defines amapiano comes a para after its link, which seems too late, - early or not at all ;)
  • The whole section has many details, but would not tell me a focus of the lyrics.
Meaning? dxneo (talk) 03:00, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
  • The last sentence has no ref which is a no-no ;)
Done dxneo (talk) 03:00, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
Promotion
  • "To promote Tyla, on 5 December 2023, Tyla announced the Tyla Tour". I don't believe it ;) - I bet the whole tour was planned to promote, not just the announcement. Under "Promotion", I believe you can drop "To promote Tyla", or add "promotional" to "tour".
Done dxneo (talk) 03:00, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
  • With one leg cancelled and the other postponed, I think we could start saying that the tour didn't happen as planned. Do we know more about planned cities, or at least a time frame for American vs. the rest?
Yes, the cities and dates are listed here. dxneo (talk) 03:00, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
  • I've watched discussions about the word "suffered" as not neutral.
I'm having a hard time tweaking this. How should I go about it? dxneo (talk) 03:00, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
Live ...
  • probably everybody knows what "pop-up shows" are.

Reception

  • I notice refs that are not in ascending numerical order, - please check for that elsewhere.
I think they are not in numerical order because they have been reused. dxneo (talk) 03:00, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
  • After having read the rather commonplace reviews, I see why only versatility made it to the lead. Sigh.
There's really not much I can put in the lead haha, but I'll try. dxneo (talk) 03:00, 9 September 2024 (UTC)

The tables look good! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:32, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

Thank you so much Gerda Arendt for your help. I now believe that we are a step closer to FA. Please do a check up and give me your honest feedback. Oh and don't forget to elaborate further on the above issues. Again, sorry for asking for too much, I want this to be as perfect as possible. I was thinking of adding this audio sample on the article, probably above the third paragraph on the Composition section, would that be okay?
