In the aftermath of the recent police raid on a newspaper in Marion County, Kansas (The Marion County Record), legal Vblogger and author Steve Lehto has posted on the history of this issue, using the example of the arrests of the Työmies newspaper staff after the 1913 Italian_Hall_disaster. The disaster happened when hundreds of mine strikers, many of whom were Finnish, were celebrating Christmas with their families and someone yelled “fire”, resulting in the stampede death of 73 people. According to Lehto, the Finnish language paper described the event as murder and it accused the police of collusion in blocking the doors. The paper’s staff was arrested under the premise that the story was inciting a riot, which never happened. One connection made by Lehto was that, in part, the Marion County police raid was justified by a concern for what the paper might publish (but had not).
Putting the case of the Marion County aside, the connection between the Työmies history and the Italian Hall disaster seems like an important and substantial piece of history not mentioned in either article. Letho’s book about the Italian Hall disaster (Death’s Door) is discussed on that page but not the connection to the Työmies newspaper staff arrests.
