Venetian intrigue of the saddest kind
[edit]In order to run the Thello service, Trenitalia discontinued the permit for Euronight-441, a long-established every-daily night-time direct train between Venezia and Budapest, Hungary, quitting the service on 10 Dec 2011. This popular train, formerly known as the Goldoni Express, has been running direct VE S.L. to BUD-Keleti service via Croatia and Slovenia, under different train names, ever since the early 1960s (reportedly first stated on 1963 marzo 15). It had good occupancy ratio and twice a week it even hauled extra waggons, that came all the way directly from Moscow!
TrenItalia told MAV hungarian railways negotiators that they don't particularly hate the hungarians, it is simply that Italy does not want ANY foreign trains, except the french connection, especially from Paris.
Italians will also close the Brenner passage to passenger train traffic by mid-2012, so austrian, swiss and german tourists soon will have to fly or take the automobile (even though these three are rich countries and their tourists would spend a lot of hard cash in Venice). TrenItalia already started to fill the Brenner passage schedule with "ghost trains" that do not run, but occupy the transit slots to block out other railway companies.
Why is this hubris from the italian railways and why doesn't the EU commission intervene to force Trenitalia accept foreign trains coming from all over Europe? After all, electrified railway travel is environmentally friendly, unlike jet airliner and automobiles. 82.131.210.163 (talk) 19:38, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
