Permutations
[edit]Whilst I have no reason to doubt the figures quoted ("There are 8,294,400 such positions in tota", "so the position of one side can be any of 2880") a citation would be appropriate. Could a knowledgeable editor please add appropriate references? Oli Filth 01:31, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
- I don't know any reference, but you can easily calculate it. Chess960 has 960 starting positions. Transcendental chess is almost the same, except that the king doesn't have to be between the rooks. So if you fill the board this way (until you place rooks and king), when you have three empty places left, you have three different places for the king, and then you can place the both rooks in the empty spaces left. So there are 3 times more positions of startup (per side), and . The 8,294,400 is the square of 2880 (). You need to square the 2880, because for every position of white there are 2880 positions for black.
- I hope you understand this explanation... And I don't know if a reference to the talk page is usual? Or it might be written in the article... Florrat 20:09, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
- There are 4x4 ways for the two bishops to be placed. Then there are 6! ways to put the rest of the pieces, except that the two knights are indistinguishable and the two rooks are indistinguishable. Each of those divide it by a factor of 2. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 21:14, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
