Copy editing notes

[edit]

Hi, these are my notes from copy editing this article, per the Guild of Copy Editors request made by Elijahandskip. I have made most of my edits to the article, and left more complicated issues to be addressed here. Ultimately, my advice is: trim. What is the most digestible format in which this information can be presented to the reader?

  • I didn't make any edits to the table structure as it seems like format used in more than one article. I think the table format has major issues, though. I think it is appropriate to use tables in this case (WP:WHENTABLE), but editors should still consider converting entirely to prose. This table simply has too many columns. As a table, it is necessary to consider how the formatting of these tables is difficult to read, especially on a narrower screen (i.e., mobile device). What content merits its own column? What is the purpose of each column?
    • There are three columns for the location; this could at least be reduced to two, and preferably just one.
    • There are no columns for injuries/deaths. Starting the summaries with 3 deaths –, etc. is strange and should be amended.
      • Deaths/injuries are actually something that warrant sortable columns. Create a column for each, using footnotes where Grazulis and the US Weather Bureau differ in their estimates.
    • Consider eliminating the "Time" column and covering it in the summary.

Thanks, and let me know if there are any issues or questions. Wracking talk! 19:02, 3 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
