I heard a story about that he turned down Bill Evans's invitation to come touring with him early in his career on the grounds that "your just a lounge pianist". Anyone know if this is true, or if there's a source on it?

Some years ago, I was at a summer school in the uk where Tony was a teacher. I believe that the above is just the kind of thing he might have said. But for me, I would love to have been Bill Evans' drummer when I was still playing drums. And if I were a pianist, I would love to be able to play as Bill Evans did; lounge pianist or not. technut. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Technut (talkcontribs) 11:44, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Inconsistency?

[edit]

This article says:

In Sheffield he was taught by Haydon Cook, who had returned to the city after a long residency in the 1950s at Ronnie Scott's in London.

But the Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club article says:

The club [Ronnie Scott's] opened on 30 October 1959 in a basement at 39 Gerrard Street in London's Soho district.

The two months left of the 1950s by then was surely all too short a time for anybody to have had "a long residency in the 1950s" there. This needs to be clarified somewhat. Kelisi (talk) 22:40, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I can find no more information online about Haydon Cook, I agree the dates do not match up. I've added a {cn} tag. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:49, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So I have now trimmed out the detail about Haydon Cook. I've added in a bit from ultimateguitar.com, although it looks a bit bloggy and may have borrowed from this article. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:02, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Birthname

[edit]

FreeBMD shows only one Sheffield birth for Oxley, registered in the June quarter 1938, which is "Arthur R", mother's name Ashton. There's also a "Clifford A", mother's name Leybourne, registered in the September quarter. So maybe that's him, assuming he was an Anthony or Antony? His birth date of 15 June 1938 is widely supported. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:55, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I found this forum thread. So I'd suggest his birthname was Clifford Anthony or Clifford Antony. Perhaps a WP:RS source can be found. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:38, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
