Operational issues and refurbishment projects

[edit]

There could be merit in having a new section for the history of significant operational issues and refurbishment projects. One possible project that could be mentioned is the major repairs to the concrete apron of the stilling basin of the Whakapapa intake.[1]. Another is major repairs at the Poutu Intake on the Tongariro River.[2]. I will try to gather some further possible topics for a new section.Marshelec (talk) 07:54, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think that would be a useful section. There have also been some changes to fish barriers e.g. removal from the Tokannu tailrace. I've only seen only passing references to these. --Gertrude206 (talk) 08:37, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Operational issues might include the 2021 power blackout which was caused by weeds blocking the Tokaanu intake in Rotoaira. [3] and [4] and [5] --Gertrude206 (talk) 09:13, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Environmental issues

[edit]

I will use this section to build up a list of possible topics for expansion of content about environmental issues.

  • One of these is the lost opportunity for white water rafting through the spectacular upper section of the Tongariro River, below the Rangipo Dam. However, there are "recreational releases" of water for 3 days a year to allow for a Grade 4 rafting experience.[6].Marshelec (talk) 08:16, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The dates for flow releases are on the Genesis website but it'd be good to find a reference that discusses how the effect on recreational rafting is mitigated. Similarly some more current information is needed on the trout fishing in the Tongariro River.--Gertrude206 (talk) 08:44, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The Whitewater NZ River Guide website [7] is good but not sure if that's an acceptable source! --Gertrude206 (talk) 08:54, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
