[edit]Shouldn't the article Tom Robinson Band be merged in with this article? Ultimately TRB was just a part of Tome Robinson's career? Any thoughts? Davidpatrick 18:26, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- Sure seems like a reason proposal to me. I've added "merge" banners to the top of the appropriate pages to facilitate discussion. I'd vote YES to merging... 172.131.12.141 (talk) 22:45, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
I would vote NO. If the band were called something else not featuring the name of TR we would not even be having this discussion. (Goldmanuk (talk) 11:05, 13 May 2008 (UTC))
I'd have to agree with Goldmanuk. The Tom Robinson Band were a band not just "a part of Tom Robinson' career" No merge please Cavie78 (talk) 13:03, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
I agree with Cavie78. TRB were a band. Tom was an important member of the group but the sum was greater than the parts. Don't merge. Yozzer66 (talk) 22:12, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
Another NO vote. TRB were a separate entity, with important musicians like "Dolphin". If/when Tom Robinson's article is fleshed out with more information about Sector 27, The Crew, his solo work, etc, it would also become rather long. Arjayay (talk) 15:02, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
Song lyrics
[edit]I believe we shouldn't be quoting large chunks of lycics for fear of copyright problems, so I removed the 8 line verse from 'Glad to be Gay' from this page, replacing with a comment about them.
I believe this is compliant with the guideline Wikipedia:Lyrics and poetry though that says the amount of lyrics you can quote legitimately is "open to interpretation" --Mortice 18:37, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
The lyrics to all of his songs are on his official website, which is linked from this page, so probably not a copyright problem. Not sure there is any need to quote them, anyway, though. --Guineveretoo 15:42, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
Bowie and the gay press
[edit]Bowie is not bisexual and Robinson was not 'reviled by the gay press' because of his sexuality. I've deleted both references. Vauxhall1964 (talk) 10:27, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
Bisexuality?
[edit]Given that it states right in the article Robinson does not identify as bisexual, why does the article state he's bisexual? He could be pansexual for example, which is not the same thing at all. If there are no objections posted in the next few days, I'm going to change the article to remove references to him being bisexual. SmashTheState (talk) 10:06, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
- You state "He could be pansexual" - which is clearly just your opinion of a possibility, i.e. a total conjecture, not a fact.
Wikipedia requires Reliable sources, so only change the article if you have a reliable source stating that Robinson is, or consideres himself to be, Pansexual. Arjayay (talk) 12:10, 18 April 2011 (UTC)- I didn't suggest changing his sexuality to pansexual. I only provided the example to show that he needn't be bisexual, QED, simply because he fucks men and women, which seems to be the reasoning used in the article for labelling him bisexual when he clearly states that he isn't. I intend to simply strip out the statement that he's bisexual. SmashTheState (talk) 14:15, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
- It's rather more complex than that, Robinson has often chosen his words to make a point, and sometimes provocatively:-
- "In those days people often used the word "bisexual" as a cop-out, so I always preferred to identify as "gay" rather than mince words"
- "a gay man who happens to be in love with a woman".
I can, therefore, agree that Robinson has made an issue out of the phraseology, but that doesn't alter the fact that other people have called him "bisexual", in reliable sources, so you can't just remove "bisexual" from the entire article.

- - I removed Although widely assumed from his public profile at the time to be homosexual, Robinson is bisexual. - it is clearly disputed by the subjects declarations of his own self descriptions. The comment presented as if fact is just unsupportable, amnd clearly disputed by the subject so the whole issue is now left to the reader to form his or her own thoughts on the matter using the well written commentary about the issue. Off2riorob (talk) 10:45, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
- The guy has a website about bisexuality, called at bothways.com. At it, you can find that he has made a radio program called "getting bi", partly based on his own story. There's this interview http://www.bothways.com/both2003/artindie.htm from 2003. And at gladtobegay.net, he speaks about his "late onset bisexuality" http://gladtobegay.net/interview-tom-robinson/part-4/ --Siden (talk) 21:46, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- '"Well to me, bisexuality means being equally attracted to people of either sex whereas I've had maybe half a dozen female lovers ever. I can't tell you how many men there've been but it's a lot more than that. So from my point of view it's simple: I'm a gay man who happened to fall in love with a woman. But ten years of explaining this to the prurient, the misinformed and the downright bigoted seems to have caused more problems than it solved. So to hell with it. If liking men and loving a woman makes me bisexual, then it's time to stand up and be a bit proud about it. So the answer to your question is "Say It Loud, I'm Bi and I'm Proud"'

Rarely performs live?
[edit]The statement that Tom rarely performs live nowadays is now well out of date. He is fully back to playing with a band on the road. I have hesitated to alter this myself, as I don't know exactly when it started. It's been a few years though. There was a big tour last year performing the first TRB album 'Power In The Darkness' all the way through, for example. Tom Robinson → Tom Robinson (musician) – Is there a primary topic for this name? While pageviews support the musician, it's hard right now to measure traffic meant for the character (redlinked Tom Robinson (To Kill a Mockingbird)) currently covered briefly at List of To Kill a Mockingbird characters § Tom Robinson and To Kill a Mockingbird § Southern life and racial injustice. Attempting to measure long-term significance, the first four pages of a Google Scholar search for "tom robinson" -author:robinson
show 30 mentions of the character vs. 4 for the musician and 5 for others; similar results at Google Books. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 23:46, 3 October 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose. Appears to be the primary topic for those only known as Tom Robinson. The character may be significant, but he's not a real person and generally real people take precedence over fictional people. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:40, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose. Clearly a character in a book is likely to score higher in Google Books and Google Scholar than a musician, but they do not measure common use. As per Necrothesp I have always understood that "real people take precedence over fictional people" - Arjayay (talk) 14:50, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
