Breaking news

A federal judge blocked Montana’s TikTok ban. According to the Associated Press. 2601:5C5:4380:FD80:29D6:D6FB:82A3:862E (talk) 01:28, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

It’s stated that TikTok has been banned due to antisemitism and in the sources given it doesn’t state that at all in fact both are op-Ed’s. As far as I can see tik tok has never been banned due to antisemitism 2601:244:5681:4620:586D:CB22:2B4E:797C (talk) 03:23, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

I think what the text is saying is that there are concerns over antisemitism, not that it has been banned for it, but it's kind of vague. 🎄Cremastra 🎄 (talk) 17:24, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

It’s well documented about ban proposals due to antisemitism. Here are sources:
anti-Semitic content on TikTok since the October 7 Hamas attack has united most members of Congress around the need to block it. The Biden administration is trying to stop its activities

It should be "Douyin and TikTok" simply because Douyin came first!

Self-explanatory! 74.106.9.73 (talk) 06:44, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

The article is about TikTok, not Douyin, therefore it comes first. Besides, it is also the more well-known of the two platforms. The elements in that sentence aren't meant to be ordered chronologically. ASpacemanFalls (talk) 09:45, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
I said below already, it's about both. But TikTok is the common name, so it should be fine for the English Wikipedia. IgelRM (talk) 15:40, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
@QuestFour: Could you comment here regarding your copyedit (which appears more significant than that)?
My understanding is that it is about both as Douyin redirects here. I think describing Douyin as a "mainland Chinese counterpart" is against WP:GLOBALIZE (The citizenlab.ca report doesn't help as a source). Why is musical.ly not mentioned in the lead and it is not a predecessor as the infobox says. IgelRM (talk) 15:15, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
Also both per the above. I don't see how mentioning Douyin as the mainland Chinese counterpart against WP:GLOBALIZE, and a predecessor of a product or software in the infobox does not necessarily require mentioning in the lead. QuestFour (talk) 12:55, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
I added a citation from Reuters which identifies Douyin as the Chinese counterpart of TikTok after the citizenlab.ca report. Thanks. Path2space (talk) 21:57, 27 January 2024 (UTC)

Company or Software?

I may be lacking reading comprehension, but it seems to me that this article is mixing the app tik tok, with the company that owns it, tik tok. Should there be a separate page for the company? 76.186.217.39 (talk) 16:26, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

Someone please update the image!!

A federal judge reversed Montana’s TikTok ban on November 30, 2023; while the article has been updated; the picture has not been. The map still shows Montana as having a current ban. It needs to show it as having a previous ban. Someone can always revert the picture if Montana’s ban is ever reinstated. I would change it myself but I don’t know how for one and secondly, I don’t think I’m able to, because as evidenced by the IP address having shown up, I am not a registered user and don’t have a Wikipedia account. 108.147.10.22 (talk) 19:29, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

Please correct

The AP article cited clearly shows that Montana’s ban was reversed on November 30; NOT December 1 like it shows on here. You’re going by the date that the source was retrieved (see reference #393) and not when the article was actually published. The AP published the article on the evening of November 30, 2023. 108.147.10.22 (talk) 19:35, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

Easily misunderstood description about ByteDance

It reads like 1% of ByteDance is mainly owned by state entities. In reality, that golden share is not in ByteDance but in ByteDance's another subsidiary in China and has nothing to do with TikTok. I cannot copyedit this article, but this should be made more clear. Steven1Yee (talk) 02:51, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

I suggest we change the paragraph starting with "On 13 March 2024" on TikTok#Federal-level to read:

On 13 March 2024, the United States House of Representatives passed H.R. 7521, which would ban TikTok completely unless it is divested from ByteDance.[1]. In April, the House of Representatives included a modified version of the bill in a foreign aid package which was passed by United States Senate on 23 April 2024.[2][3] Allymonies (talk) 05:04, 24 April 2024 (UTC)

With the TikTok ban bill now being passed in the U.S., I propose we change the paragraph starting with "On 13 March 2024" on TikTok#Federal-level to read:

On 13 March 2024, the United States House of Representatives passed H.R. 7521, which would ban TikTok completely unless it is divested from ByteDance.[1] In April, the United States Congress included a modified version of the bill in a foreign aid package signed into law by President Joe Biden on 24 April 2024. This bill gives TikTok until 19 January 2025 to be divested from ByteDance or the ban will go into effect.[2] Allymonies (talk) 16:48, 24 April 2024 (UTC)

Killings of TikTokers in Iraq

Hello! I came to add some sentences about the Death of Noor Alsaffar and Umm Fahad to the page, but wasn't sure what section would be useful to include the infomation on them, and the the topic more generally? I would welcome guidance from page-watchers on this. Lajmmoore (talk) 20:33, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

They are under these categories.[1][2] Their articles are mostly about the influencers themselves, their deaths and the Iraqi government. There isn't that much information about TikTok the app or company. CurryCity (talk) 14:33, 30 April 2024 (UTC)
I think my question is more, should there be a secion on the page about them, and similar deaths as a result of activity on the app? Lajmmoore (talk) 08:16, 23 May 2024 (UTC)
Just for using the app? No. It appears the killings were due to how certain parts of society reacted to seeing things or people they don't like online. CurryCity (talk) 00:09, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
