Phrenology?

[edit]

Someone please get serious.

Members

[edit]

Why does it appear that the "Members" section of the article has been cut off, and is excluding large amounts of information (i.e., that Trotter and Thompson were the founding members, they were originally known as "The Square Roots," &c.)?

Recommendation to add a Timeline

[edit]

What does everyone think of about adding a members timeline similar to the one in the The Verve Pipe article. It looks like a very good way to communicate the membership. I'd like to do it, but I'm not sure when I'll find time, so if anyone else wants to take the lead, please do. Also it's pretty easy to determine who was a member of the group at each album release from liner notes, but is there a good source of info for the dates of membership changes between albums? Jean15paul (talk) 17:37, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • I just saw this after uploading a timeline, but have updated with an info graphic similar to one id seen on RCHP wiki page. Let me know of any issues or inaccuracies, suggestions, ect. After looking at the code on other pages it seems that updating this to a user editable bar graph would be more wiki friendly going forward. td65924 (talk) 14:06, 23 January 2014 (EST)

Discography

[edit]

The Do This Well compilation of remixes and rarities should not appear in the discography. It was a poor quality, bootlegged, unauthorized collection. I've deleted it from the discography. Jean15paul 04:08, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't believe the concert in Montreal caused speculation of a new album... Usher performed with The Roots at their annual Roots Picnic, and they basically did the same set. My guess is that Usher was invited to perform and brought The Roots along. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.91.185.194 (talk) 21:43, 21 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Departure of Hub

[edit]

Not quite sure if I can put this in the article, but I wanted to address the speculation of Hub leaving The Roots. I was at their Montreal show earlier tonight and they had a new bassist, a younger guy named Owen. After the show, I had the chance to speak with Black Thought who confirmed that Hub had "retired" and that tonight's show was Owen's first live show with The Roots. If you wiki gurus think this should be added, please do so.

Collaboration albums

[edit]

How come there isn't a section mentioning their albums including Booker T, or Betty Wright? I noticed it mentions the John Legend collaboration album. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Td65924 (talkcontribs) 21:34, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Where's Jill Scott?

[edit]

Jill Scott was discovered by ?uestlove, and brought into the studio where she wrote the chorus to "You Got Me", the song that garnered The Roots first Grammy, and toured with The Root performing that piece, and was showcased by The Roots as an up and coming talent and member of The Roots Crew. Ms. Scott went on to establish herself as a standard and force in a new subgenre known as neo-soul which, for a time, was held down by only herself and one Ms. Erykah Badu. She has garnered too many awards to mentioned any one, and it all started in Philly with The Legendary Roots Crew. How do you go through the entire cast of Roots affiliates mentioning some members who have had nothing to do with the crew since the 90's and not mention the great Jill Scott even once?! What an oversite! Peace. Thomas Willis (talk) 04:15, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

the/The

[edit]

You are invited to participate in an RfC at Wikipedia talk:Requests for mediation/The Beatles on the issue of capitalising the definite article when mentioning that band's name in running prose. This long-standing dispute is the subject of an open mediation case and we are requesting your help with determining the current community consensus. Thank you.--andreasegde (talk) 06:32, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Where can we put in the article that The Roots collaberated with Brian Transeau on a song called "Tao of the Machine"? 98.195.166.129 (talk) 03:09, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Continuous track numbering

[edit]

There needs to be a better source than that. It doesn't mention any albums post-2008, and it appears to be some fan's blog. Is there an official source? —Gendralman (talk) 02:41, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

?uestlove speaks to this in his book, i will try and find that section as to provide a legitimite source for this reference. I agree the link seems not very legit, i also believe he mentions they only did this for a certain period of time (ie not all albums).--Td65924 (talk) 19:29, 23 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Made a first rough pass at revising this. Updated the section with actual discography research and references. Questloves quote in the book seems to be incorrect (with the number the album started with) but explains the impetus behind the numbering. This should add some validity to the section. Ill take a look with fresh eyes again tomorrow to try and smooth out the grammar.--Td65924 (talk) 21:48, 23 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Late Night with Jimmy fallon

[edit]

The various references to LNJF should probably be consolidated off into its own section, or linked for further reading to the LNJF wiki, which is admittedly weak as it stands.--167.176.6.8 (talk) 20:03, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah - I did this and hunted down some needed citations, but the section - and the article overall- needs more work. Tvoz/talk 21:25, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Fleshed it out more, not sure whether inclusion of Obama and Romney is a good idea in 'Slow Jam' section, but those videos are of merit based on their reception and participants. Included what i thought were sketches that revolved around the Roots and are very successful and couldn't exist in their current form without them. Im sure i missed something and the language could be tightened up some, but i gotta come back with fresh eyes after working on it for so long.--Td65924 (talk) 19:40, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Awards

[edit]

I can not find any supporting evidence that The 'Max Stevenson Award' is even a thing much less was awarded to the Roots. I have removed it as such, but maybe someone knows something I dont?

  • Won 'Max Stevenson International Hip-Hop Award' for Game Theory album, 2007

Eve is not listed as an official Grammy recipient for 'You Got Me' by Grammy.com and I have removed her from the artist listing for that award. There seems to be conflicting accounts of Eve being a recipient in the media with some sites saying she was a winner, she is listed on the linear notes for 'You Got Me'. However, she is not listed as an official winner on Grammy.com's archived list of winners from that year, and is not listed with the Roots and Erykah Badu. In 2009 Questlove brought his Grammy for that song onto LNJF to show that she is not on the plaque despite her work on the song. I'm assuming there was some sort of technical glitch or mix up for her not being included, but none-the-less she is not a winner for that song. She would win her own in 2002.

As a side note, i cant get two of the 'winner' designations to show in BOLD for some weird reason even though they are coded correctly and I tried re-entering it several times. --Td65924 (talk) 21:20, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What's wrong with the timeline?

[edit]

On my computer, at least, the timeline looks really strange. Lines come from the left to the vertical lines in the table. This obscures some of the text and looks really strange. Can this be fixed? I don't know how to do this. 3s (talk) 13:07, 22 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The Grand Wizzards

[edit]

The Grand Wizzards redirects to The Roots, but the name isn't mentioned anywhere in this article. Can someone add a few sentences to explain who the Grand Wizzards are/were? Pburka (talk) 19:31, 25 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
