- Reference 15, to Billboard stats, in Refererences list is a dead link. (Bistrototal (talk) 08:51, 24 November 2009 (UTC))[reply]

- Well...from a European perspective, live New Pornographers all have Kathryn Calder as the lead female vocals, so therefore is very much a band member. Tomkeene 21:20, 13 August 2006 (GMT)

- Not sure about adding Nora O'Connor. New Pornographers' website lists her, so that's good enough for me!

Neko Case: I don't think Neko has been in the band since 1997. Seconded by Evan Symons - I saw them live a number of times before Neko joined... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 23.16.4.251 (talk) 02:04, 4 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

amazon.com has Nora O'Connor listed as a member as well in their list of albums by New Pornographers members in a list posted this year that was part of A.C. Newman's album recommendations, so I guess she's still considered a band member. Elocina 00:22, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Supergroup

[edit]

Carl objected to this term in the early days of the band because none of them were known outside of Canada before the TNPs, but in recent years Neko Case and Dan Bejar have become indie superstars in their own right, so the context that this quote was made in has changed significantly.BigRockFan (talk) 23:36, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Besides the fact that these two are not superstars and even if they were, it still doesnt meet the definition of supergroup. A supergroup is a rock group or one formed by musicians already famous from playing in other groups. Not famous, or almost famous, or more accurately only famous in Vancouver, after the fact. 2605:A601:A9EB:5100:D0B2:86:4006:8354 (talk) 01:58, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Kathryn Calder

[edit]

If Kathryn Calder is just singing with the NPs on tour as a replacement for Neko Case, but hasn't be on any of the NP albums, should she be listed as a band member?

Also, I think this article should mention the NPs were originally intended to be a side project (according to an article I found on eMusic), however, they continued recording due to the sucess of Mass Romantic. From what I've heard on NPR, NP members like Neko Case and Dan Bejar (Destroyer) are now less involved in the band, only contributing a few songs per album.

Elocina 23:04, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Kathryn Calder not only tours with them, but will be singing/playing on their forthcoming release. This is according to a Winnipeg Sun article written by David Schmeichel dated 2006. In any case, she's listed on the band website as being a band member. Folduprabbit 07:09, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Kathryn Calder does appear on Twin Cinema. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.153.136.113 (talkcontribs).
Ms. Calder plays a larger role on the new Together album, she is lead vocalist on at least one track. I would like to change first sentence of History section to reflect that she also shares lead vocalist duties[ http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/14195-together/]. Thoughts? Theinterior (talk) 21:54, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I would not have a problem with that at all. Freshfighter9talk 22:00, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Broken Social Scene

[edit]

Interesting to note, TNB is listed as a Canadian Indie Supergroup like Broken Social Scene. Perhaps a new article is in order?

Anonymous Deletion Requests

[edit]

User:209.217.110.91 has been tagging a number of obviously notable music pages for speedy deletion, despite their notability being easily assessed with a copy of the WP:MUSIC guidelines and a web browser open to google. The New Pornographers, John Collins (Canadian musician), Nardwuar the Human Serviette have all been tagged as being vanity pages or otherwise not notable. The Evaporators, a band in which both John (of The New Pornographers) and Nardwuar (National TV and Radio personality) play has also been submitted for deletion, and not a single vote to delete has been recieved on that. This may have some connection to User:Arthur Ellis or someone connected to Warren_Kinsella vandalism. -- Xinit 14:57, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry guys, this has to do with the Warren Kinsella associatiom. I think it is three degrees of association, you'll be asked for speedy deletion? Arthur Ellis did this. Pete Peters 22:06, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Layout

[edit]

Do we need to have the band members listed twice? I appreciate that the second time acts to show their links to other bands, but surely the two can be assimilated into one list. Tomkeene

WTF?

[edit]

"The name of the band was supposedly chosen by Newman from a quotation attributed to Jimmy Swaggart, who once called music "the new pornography," although Newman did not know of the quote at the time. [3]"

This does not make any sense. Aaadddaaammm 20:10, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Seconded. My theory is that Dan Bejar suggested the name, given that it's referenced in one of his Destroyer songs, "City of Daughters," which predated Mass Romantic. Given Dan's ability to have this sort of postmodern method of writing lyrics, this is not as far-fetched as it sounds. I'm posting it with citation. 24.91.40.226 21:18, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thirded. Dan also has a song on We'll Build Them a Golden Bridge (1996) entitled "The Pornographers." 70.22.199.46 08:35, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Another possible influence

[edit]

I totally lack citation for this, hence just a talk page remark, but I have to say that their vocals sound to me to be very influenced by Belle and Sebastian. - Jmabel | Talk 02:04, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Carl does name-check Belle and Sebastian in this interview, so I think it's safe to say they're an influence (at least re: Mass Romantic). Prguy72 (talk) 01:01, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Searching for a better free photo

[edit]

Is there a free/libre photo that shows as many members of the band as clearly as the current promotional photo? It would be nice to get the promo photo replaced with a good, libre photo.

Jenolen speak it! 17:40, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Here are a few alternatives: [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7]. Most of those are of a sufficiently high resolution to crop down, I'll be happy to crop and clean up any of the candidates. ˉˉanetode╦╩ 18:40, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to do so; please also be sure to update the line-up box; people keep changing the photo, but not the information which goes with it, making this article less than helpful on the "encyclopedic" scale. Jenolen speak it! 01:30, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please clean up the caption if you're going to replace the photo. Thanks! Jenolen speak it! 02:54, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Trivia?

[edit]

According to this article their song "Electric Version" will be in the game Rock Band. Should that be noted on the page, perhaps in a trivia section? It's just kind of tacked onto the end of the Electric Version page. McFlynnTHM 13:41, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

SL Tribune Editorial

[edit]

I am not quite sure it is quite newsworthy enough to post in the article, but I would feel remiss if I did not at least submit this for consideration.

The Salt Lake Tribune just ran an editorial [8] on their website written by a Utahn concerned about the New Pornographers. I really can't even describe it; it has to be read to believed. The article created a flood of some of the most entertaining derision I have seen since Bristol Palin decided to become a spokesperson for abstinence. Enjoy. Phrenology (talk) 17:21, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dan Bejar

[edit]

According to Carl's recent interview [9], Dan Bejar is not a "former" member; he's simply not on this record. Prguy72 (talk) 02:24, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Another reference [10] to Bejar not being a "former member." Without objection, I think this edit is in order. Prguy72 (talk) 18:19, 24 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
