Your helpdesk question: "Why is there a padlock?"

[edit]

You wrote:

I'm new to this and have just created the page The Gift of Fear as an attempt to familiarize myself with Wikipedia formatting. However, after adding some links to my source a padlock has appeared next to the link. What is this, and is it bad? I apologize if this is common knowledge or if I have made a mistake; I have looked through all of the tutorials I could find and was unable to find any information about this. Also, if anyone happens to spot any other errors in the page, if you could explain why they are errors to me--as opposed to merely correcting them--so I can learn how this system better works I would be appreciative. I am not sure if I will be able to find my back here to check to see if anyone has commented on this file, my email address is ------ and I would appreciate any mentoring the community feels inclined to offer. Thanks.

And I have replied - I'm copying it here for your ease of reference.

Hello, I have removed your email address to avoid you being hit by spam. The padlock symbol denotes that the web address is to a secure connection (see the article at https). There's nothing to worry about. I don't have time to look at the rest of the page for suggestions, I'm afraid, but hopefully somebody else will soon. Regards, BencherliteTalk

Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with. BencherliteTalk 23:29, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good work on The Gift of Fear. Here is a reward, in flower form. :) Prodego talk 01:06, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Happy to help. Incidentally, it's a good idea to get into the habit of signing messages that you leave on talk pages, so that people can see who said what and when. All you need to do is add ~~~~ at the end of your message, and it gets turned into your account name with date/time stamp, like this: BencherliteTalk 11:42, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. I know he's been in the news a few other times. I'll try to dig up some of those articles when I have the chance. Zagalejo^^^ 04:44, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to Meetup/Seattle6, a focus group

[edit]

Hello. I'm part of a research group at the University of Washington (Seattle campus), and my group is reaching out to Wikipedians in the Puget Sound area. We're hosting a focus group designed to gather information on what Wikipedians would like to know about each other when interacting on Wikipedia. Our end goal is to create an embedded application that helps people quickly know more about others' history and activity on Wikipedia, and we feel our design will be much more useful if it's based on insights of users like you.

I'm hoping that the chance to help out local researchers, to engage in lively face-to-face discussion with other Seattle Wikipedians, and to contribute to Wikipedia in a new way will entice you to join us. The session lasts 2 hours and snacks are provided. Sessions will be held on UW Seattle campus - directions will be sent after registration. Your contribution will be greatly appreciated!

Willing and able to help us out? RSVP here. Want to know more? Visit our user talk page . Please help us contact other local Wikipedians, too! Commprac01 (talk) 02:37, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Tom Biscardi for deletion

[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Tom Biscardi is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tom Biscardi until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Zagalejo^^^ 19:44, 5 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article Velox: Critical Approaches to Contemporary Film has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable ephemeral journal, only 2 issues ever produced. No independent sources. Does not meet WP:NJournals or WP:GNG.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Michael Johns

[edit]

I have just moved your draft to Michael Johns (policy analyst). Good job of editing! DGG ( talk ) 01:05, 21 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. File:VeloxLogo2.jpg listed for discussion

[edit]

A file that you uploaded or altered, File:VeloxLogo2.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Files for discussion. Please see the discussion to see why it has been listed (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry). Feel free to add your opinion on the matter below the nomination. Thank you. Cloudbound (talk) 18:37, 14 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Utah Stories requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, a group of people, an individual animal, an organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content, or an organized event that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.
