Background edit
[edit]I reverted the background to an older version. The line "He had previously said that in order to respect her family, he had told the public that the incident was entirely his poetic license" is not backed up by either of the sources provided and contradicts the sourced interview where he Brian Vander Ark says that the abortion was true but the suicide was poetic license, nothing about respect for the family due to a suicide that apparently never happened.
I also removed the information that was sourced from the Gull Lake High School school paper. First off, I don't know how source worthy a high school paper is when writing something on Wikipedia. Second, it provides a third different story where neither the abortion nor the suicide occurred. However this contradicts the Exclusive Magazine interview from 2007 and a more recent interview I found with Radio.com from 2014 http://radio.com/2014/10/01/single-again-the-verve-pipe-the-freshmen/. I find it hard to believe that he would change the story in 2012, where the only apparent source is from a high school paper written by a high school student only to go back to the story he was saying in 2007 two years later in 2014. Of course it is completely possible it happened but I don't feel that adding it into the Wikipedia page based only on a school paper is correct.
Additionally, in the Radio.com interview Brian claims to not remember ever stating that the song was based on his girlfriends suicide although he does not outright deny ever saying it. He could possibly have said it and forgot, said it and want to forget he did because of possible shame or something, or in fact never said it. This can bring some doubt to the validity of the fansite The Verve Pipeing, which I personally don't believe is that source worth in the first place. I am not going to do anything but it may be possible that adding a sentence about Brian not remembering claiming to be based on a girlfriend who committed suicide. 2605:6000:F28A:CF01:84B1:6B53:F179:537A (talk) 05:27, 14 February 2016 (UTC)
Cover versions?
[edit]The internet seems to think that matchbox 20 and mustard plug both cover this song. Is this true and would it then be notable to include? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.206.247.213 (talk) 16:05, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

The Freshmen (song) → The Freshmen
- Disambiguation time! "The Freshmen" currently redirects to a list of Gossip Girl episodes (which is silly because the The Verve Pipe single is much more notable!) Wikkitywack (talk) 01:42, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
- I would be arguing for a strict move to "The Freshmen", as an undistinguished Gossip Girl episode does not warrant disambiguation, but it appears there is a popular Irish showband called "The Freshmen", so "The Freshmen (song)" is fine. Wikkitywack (talk) 04:11, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose move, but restore The Freshmen redirect to point to the dab page
FreshmanFreshmen as it used to for 2.5 years. I have added the Gossip Girls episode to Freshmen in expectation. Tassedethe (talk) 13:19, 1 August 2010 (UTC)- Modify my !vote. Tassedethe (talk) 08:38, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
- Support a redirect of The Freshmen to
Freshmana disambiguation page (first choice) or a move of The Freshmen (song) to The Freshmen (second choice). "The Freshmen" is the primary topic for that formulation but it is ambiguous vis-à-vis "The Freshman". However, "The Freshmen" should not redirect to an episode list. — AjaxSmack 03:04, 2 August 2010 (UTC)- Whoa, whoa - wait. Shouldn't a redirect of The Freshmen to Freshmen (disambiguation) be among the top choices? This would be far, far preferable than a redirect to Freshman, where a user looking for The Verve Pipe song will only be frustrated. Or is The Freshmen to The Freshmen (disambiguation) still on the menu? When somebody's looking for The Verve Pipe song or the Irish band, they are likelier to type "The" Freshmen, so this might be useful. (There would be at least 3 topics on this new page immediately - The Freshmen (song), The Freshmen (Irish showband) & "The Freshmen", episode of Gossip Girl.) Wikkitywack (talk) 07:09, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
- Somehow I failed to notice I had suggested a redirect to the wrong page. Freshman is not a dab page and The Freshmen should def not redirect there. Tassedethe (talk) 08:38, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
- I still think The Freshmen (disambiguation) would be nice... Wikkitywack (talk) 20:23, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry, I didn't check all of the dab pages carefully and I'll amend my opinion. I support a unified disambiguation page for all of the (The) Freshma/en entries. I think Freshman (disambiguation) would be the best place but I'm not that particular. With relatively few entries on each page, there's no need for three or four different dab pages for the same word singular and plural and with and without the definite article. — AjaxSmack 00:51, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
- I suppose... but a big old list takes longer to navigate. Wikkitywack (talk) 01:07, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
- Except that a list wouldn't really be that big. Beats four different dab pages, anyway. — AjaxSmack 00:35, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

- Currently, and this seems adequate to me: This routine pop music song is linked to from Freshman (disambiguation). The Freshman redirects to Freshman (disambiguation). "Freshman" primarily means a USA first-year university student. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 10:07, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
- Closing: do not move. The other "disambiguation" pages are currently redirects to Freshman (disambiguation). Ths current situation seems satisfactory. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 10:56, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
