wrong link
[edit]in the box the link for 'based on' takes you to a BBC drama series of the same name rather than the ITV quiz program the US version is based on. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.166.163.125 (talk) 17:33, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- Fixed, Thanks. Nick1372 (talk) 17:56, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
Episode list
[edit]I tried editing in an episode box for tonight's results, using the code from the U. K. show, but I couldn't quite get it to work right. Here they are for someone more knowledgeable:
Episode 1: 2 contestants banked $55,000; target of 13 caught with 0:40 remaining. Episode 2: 3 contestants banked $180,000; target of 18/chaser scored 16 - each contestant wins $60,000.
I sandboxed in my private sandbox for a while, but could never get the table to look right.Lrgetrout (talk) 06:25, 7 August 2013 (UTC)
- @Lrgetrout: I would love to help you, but I cannot find your sandbox! Can you copy and paste the code below? I will try to use my limited experience with wikitables to help you. Thanks, Nick1372 (talk) 05:21, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
- Individual results of game show episodes (that are not part of a continuing series, i.e. The Apprentice or Survivor) do not meet WP:N and would likely fall under WP:IINFO. AldezD (talk) 19:34, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
- @AldezD:: This is the American adaptation of the British show with the same name. Two seasons have been purchased by GSN, each with 8 episodes.
- If it is not appropriate here, then the lengthy list on the British page is not appropriate either, imo. Lrgetrout (talk) 04:44, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
- Individual results of game show episodes (that are not part of a continuing series, i.e. The Apprentice or Survivor) do not meet WP:N and would likely fall under WP:IINFO. AldezD (talk) 19:34, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks @Nick1372:. I'll start with the code from the British version, cut down to just two weeks (one where the chaser catches the players, and one where the chaser fails, so you can see the difference, if you are not familiar with the show):
Series 1 | |||
---|---|---|---|
Episode | Chaser | Contestants surviving/amount banked | Final Chase result
|
- Two changes need to be made: Mark Labbett is the only chaser for the US version, so I attempted to remove the chaser notation, but it left the table a mess, as below. I have also edited in the American results into this code, into what seems to be the appropriate place:
Series 1 | ||
---|---|---|
Episode | Contestants surviving/amount banked | Final Chase result
|
- But you see how poorly that turns out. Additionally, it leaves the results in pounds, where the US show uses the US dollar.
- Given some time to think about it, it might be in the template used; we might need a different template for US use.
- Thanks for any help you can provide. Lrgetrout (talk) 04:40, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
- @Lrgetrout: The British version article uses a template to fill in all of the cells. It's fine-tuned to the British show, so we can't use it for this article. We just have to fill it in manually.
Season 1 | ||
---|---|---|
Episode | Contestants surviving/amount banked | Final Chase result |
1 | 2 contestants banked $55,000 | Target of 13 caught with 40 seconds remaining |
2 | 3 contestants banked $180,000 | Target of 18 not caught with the Chaser's score of 16 |
This is what I've come up with. I'm thinking it could use some tweaking, but this is what it would end up looking like. Nick1372 (talk) 05:30, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
Here's a non-colapsible version. I think this is better for our purposes.
Episode | Contestants surviving / amount banked |
Final Chase result |
---|---|---|
1 | 2 contestants banked $55,000 | Target of 13 caught with 40 seconds remaining |
2 | 3 contestants banked $180,000 | Target of 18 not caught with the Chaser's score of 16 |
Which would you prefer? Nick1372 (talk) 05:34, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
I've tweaked it some more. Nick1372 (talk) 05:43, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
- I would personally prefer the collapsible version over the non-collapsible. That way, people would not be unduly "spoiled" should they not wish to view the content. Either is appropriate though. Lrgetrout (talk) 13:33, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
- This type of episode recap is still not appropriate and fails to meet guidelines in WP:EPISODE, WP:N and WP:IINFO. Individual episodes of game shows are not notable. Arguing that it should be included here only because it is included the BBC version is not appropriate, either (WP:OTHERSTUFF, WP:ALLORNOTHING). AldezD (talk) 12:15, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
- Have you made this request in the British page also then? Again, exact same format, exact same show, so the policy should apply to both. Lrgetrout (talk) 13:33, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
- No, I Haven't been editing the page for the British version. Again, WP:OTHERSTUFF and WP:ALLORNOTHING are not valid arguments that negate guidelines in WP:EPISODE, WP:N and WP:IINFO and these arguments should not be used in this discussion. AldezD (talk) 14:43, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
- WP:NOT#STATS also applies in addition to the other guidelines. AldezD (talk) 14:55, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
- I don't think that either WP:OTHERSTUFF or WP:ALLORNOTHING apply here. They warn against using other similar articles to base discussions on but the table we're comparing this to is almost the exact same thing. Admittedly, it probably does fail under WP:NOT#STATS. Nick1372 (talk) 16:34, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
- WP:NOT#STATS also applies in addition to the other guidelines. AldezD (talk) 14:55, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
- You should probably include the results for episodes 3 and 4. 3 contestants made it to Final with $63,000, posted 10 points (which later became 11 due to the Beast getting the first question pushed back), caught with 51 seconds? Someone should check. That was all in episode 3. 2 contestants made it to Final with $40,000, posted 15 points, and I forget how much time the Beast had left before they were caught. I'm too lazy to watch reruns. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.115.73.27 (talk) 00:20, 22 August 2013 (UTC)
Rename "Chaser" to "Beast"
[edit]In the US version of The Chase, Brooke never mentions Mark Labbett as the Chaser, yet there are multiple instances where the Wiki page does, mostly in the Gameplay section. Should all instances of the Chaser be renamed the Beast, as that's what he's called in America? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.115.73.27 (talk) 19:21, 3 September 2013 (UTC)
- "The Beast" is a nickname for Labbett himself, while the Chaser is Labbett's actual role in the show. If Labbett happends to be replaced, his replacement won't be a "Beast"; he/she will be a Chaser, possibly with an nickname as well. Therefore, it stays as is. Nick1372 (talk) 22:25, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
- But "Chaser" is never used on the show, not in any sources, and is basically a made up term. Maybe the British series used the term, but that doesn't apply here. There is no source that says Labbet's role is "the chaser", it needs to be changed.Caringtype1 (talk) 21:29, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
Gameplay
[edit]In the Final Chase section, it was stated that if the Chaser (AKA "The Beast") had caught all three chasers in their individual chases, then they would choose one player to participate in the Final Chase for $15,000 ($5,000 each).
This sounds like an assumption based on what has happened on the UK version under the same circumstances, except in the UK version it is played for £4000 (£1000 per player, 4 players)
I do not recall a single episode in the first two seasons where The Beast caught all three players. Please inform us of your source which verifies the amount played for when this situation happens. Kaos 42 (talk) 06:00, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
- I have removed the unsourced claims for now, but I will add them back in if it actually happens and I can cite the episode. --Bentvfan54321 (talk) 13:24, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
- Go ahead and add it back in. It just happened on the August 12,2014 episode, which is airing now as I type this. Kaos 42 (talk) 00:48, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
- Done with the episode cited. --Bentvfan54321 (talk) 00:51, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

[edit]Infobox
- Could we get a "Running time" parameter? Source #8 says ":60", so you could at least put "60 minutes, including adverts".
- Partly done though runtimes generally do not include commercials on other American game show articles. Bentvfan54321 (talk) 19:41, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
- Even better - the one hour option would be if we didn't know how long the episodes last. 42-44 minutes is more accurate. Bilorv (Talk)(Contribs) 21:19, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Cash Builder and individual chases
- In the second paragraph, maybe the description of lower and higher offers should be rephrased. I've seen the UK version of the show, so I understood it, but I think especially the sentence "The contestant must answer five questions correctly without being caught to bank the money and continue to the Final Chase" is confusing, as it is untrue (it could be 4/6 questions) - regardless of later clarification. I think the second paragraph in the UK article explains it better.
- "given credit for an incorrect answer"...so, they are given no credit at all? I'd replace with
...and do not move.
- "until the contestant either banks their prize money" - this made me think (momentarily) that banking was a choice the contestant could make (like banking on The Weakest Link, for instance). I'd write something along the lines of
until the contestant reaches the end of the board, and banks their prize money.
- "or if they are locked out" - perhaps add
by the time limit
or something similar.
The Final Chase
- "These contestants": change to
the contestants
- "or moves the team ahead by one if he is at the starting line": there is no real "starting line" - the Chaser is just not on the board yet (at least, not in the UK show). I thought of
...if the Chaser has not moved yet
, but that's not technically true; maybeif the Chaser has not moved onto the board
. - I'd explicitly mention that if the Chaser gives a wrong answers, but the contestants also answer incorrectly, no-one moves at all.
- I'd completely remove the sentence "If there is one contestant for the Final Chase, that player wins all of the money"; it seems redundant next to the explanation of how the prize fund is divided.
Production
- You've included dates for when the second and third seasons premiered, but not the first. It makes sense to put the date "August 6, 2013" somewhere in the section for when the first episode of the first season aired.
Reception
- Maybe you could get more from the Manhattan Digest review - for instance, Tyminski also talks about the [lack of] difficulty and "rapid" pace of the game.
- I think "argued that the presence of "dick-related questions" hurt the series when comparing it with the British version of the show" is a bit of a misinterpretation of the review. Am I missing something? I can't see anywhere where Teti criticizes questions with sexual innuendos, let alone that this "hurts" the show when compared with the British version.
- The Emmy nomination is described in less detail in Reception than in the lead. For instance, The American Bible Challenge is mentioned in the lead in the paragraph about the Emmy nomination but not under Reception. The relevant sentences should probably be swapped around: whatever the solution, anything mentioned in the lead should also appear in the Reception section.
- The Chase was #9 on this list - perhaps this deserves a mention in the article.
Overall, the article is good, but a bit small; I understand that it's not going to be a particularly large article but is there nothing else that could be added? Maybe there could be more detail in the Ratings section. Bilorv (Talk)(Contribs) 18:42, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for your review. I'll do my best to address all these issues as soon as I can. Thanks, --Bentvfan54321 (talk) 19:31, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
- Done with pretty much everything, including an expansion on the ratings section. Let me know if anything else needs to be fixed. --Bentvfan54321 (talk) 20:44, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
- Everything's been addressed. Good work. :) Pass for GA. Bilorv (Talk)(Contribs) 21:19, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
Possible rewrite of part of the gameplay; see FAC
[edit](See the current FAC.) Here's a suggested rewrite for the gameplay section; having never seen the game I found it hard to follow, so I rewrote it to check I understood it.
- Three new contestants compete on each episode as a team. In the first round, each contestant in turn adds money for their team by answering as many questions correctly as possible during a one-minute rapid-fire round, entitled the "Cash Builder." Each correct answer in this round adds $5,000 to the bank; during celebrity episodes, contestants start with $5,000 already in the bank. At the end of the Cash Builder, the contestant participates in a "chase", a key element of the show. In the chase, the chaser and the contestant each answer questions, with the contestant starting with an advantage, and the chaser attempting to catch up. The contestant's goal is to answer enough questions correctly to move the earned winnings along the game board into the team bank without being caught by the chaser, whose job is to catch them by capitalizing on mistakes made by the contestant. The contestant has the option of starting five steps away from the bank, meaning that they must answer five questions correctly without being caught to bank the money and continue to the next round. Before the chase starts, the chaser will make two offers to the contestant: one offer will be to play for a lower amount, but start one step closer to the bank, meaning that they will have to answer one less question correctly; the other offer will be to play for a higher amount, but start one step further away from the bank. On rare occasions, if the contestant chooses the higher offer, the chaser may escalate the stakes by offering a "super offer" for an even higher amount, with the contestant being required to answer seven questions correctly without being caught. The chaser starts eight spaces away from the bank.
- After the contestant decides which amount to play for, the prize money is displayed on the gameboard. The contestant and chaser are presented with the same multiple choice question, and each locks-in their answer separately. After one has selected their answer, they may not change it and the other has five seconds to answer after them, otherwise they are locked out and do not advance on the gameboard. For each question the contestant answers correctly, the prize money shown on the gameboard moves one step closer to the team bank. Similarly, the chaser moves one step closer to the contestant's prize money every time he earns a right answer. Additional questions are asked until the contestant reaches the end of the board (thus banking the prize money), or the chaser catches the contestant eliminating them from the game. No movement is made by the contestant and/or the chaser if an incorrect answer is provided or if they are locked out by the time limit.
- After all three contestants have played a Cash Builder round followed by a chase, the contestants who were not caught by the chaser advance to the Final Chase, with the team bank set to the total that they won in their Cash Builder rounds. If all three contestants fail to win their individual chases, the team selects one contestant to play the Final Chase alone for a total of $15,000 ($5,000 per contestant). During celebrity episodes, celebrity contestants that get caught leave with $5,000 for their respective charities.

New series
[edit]I’ve seen promos to a new series in 2018 hosted by Bradley walsh. I’m pretty sure the beast is going to be the only chaser and the studio is going to be the exact same studio as the uk back in 2013 . I added in Bradley being the new host in 2018 but I didn’t add anything else in incase it wasn’t 100% correct. If you could ( I’m not great at editing) edit the page to show about the new series once more details come out?? Thanks Calumrjs2005 (talk) 14:50, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
- Please review WP:V. This type of speculation needs to be sourced before it can be added to the article. You may find some other useful links about content and sourcing at the verifiability guideline page. AldezD (talk) 15:00, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
- @Calumrjs2005: Like AldezD, I agree that this needs verifiability. Google turned up nothing, and this is a featured article so it's especially important that everything is sourced properly. --Bcschneider53 (talk) 15:23, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
ABC Episode Guide
[edit]I personally don't think the page should feature an episode guide. It just seems kinda odd for a game show page in general. Most ABC game shows like Pyramid, Press Your Luck, and Supermarket Sweep don't have episode guides on their pages. The other international versions of The Chase don't have episode guides on their pages, so why this one? BrickMaster02 (talk) 19:13, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- Per this discussion, I do not believe a list of episodes is necessary. This isn't a reality competition or tournament-style game show that spans multiple weeks and episodes. While some of the ratings information may be worth keeping for the reception section, I see no reason to have a full list of episodes when we don't have them for other game shows like this one. I'll cc @AldezD: as well for some more input, but I'm leaning towards removing the guide as well. --Bcschneider53 (talk) 23:34, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
- WP:DEADHORSE I removed the episode guide. AldezD (talk) 14:20, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
- IP readded it, and I've just reverted it. My main goal in my edits was to improve it from what the IP originally had, but yes, per the responses above (especially regarding previous AfD for similar listings), I'm good with removing it as well. Will note though that I did put the episode guide/tables into a sandbox article of mine, that I'll likely keep updating. Magitroopa (talk) 06:42, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
