World's most selective colleges?

I don't look forward to the state of education when these colleges will be the shining examples of some nightmarish future. The only common thread I can find among these colleges is their expensive (and in fact over-inflated) price.

Alumni

Didn't John Cheever get expelled? shouldn't there be a note for that or something?

Yes, I believe it was for smoking on campus. It was also the subject of his short story, Expelled.

Hmm... but next to his label as an alumus, shouldn't there be a note that he was expelled?

Was he really expelled for smoking? In his fictionalized account ("Expelled," his first story, published in the New Republic in 1929) Cheever makes it clear he felt stifled at the school and his marks suffered along with his spirit, and that was the reason. He apparently failed French and algebra (source: The Scribner Encyclopedia of American Lives, Volume 1: 1981-1985. Charles Scribner's Sons, 1998.) But the introduction to the story in First Fiction, edited by Kathy Kiernan and Michael Moore, (Little Brown, 1994), again says it was for smoking. What is the source for this? Could anyone from the school clear this up? Would it require his family's permission to publish this information?KarenMerguerian (talk) 18:09, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Clarification sought: Mathletes

Text reads:

The Thayer Traveling Mathletes has had its most successful year in its history. After winning their division..

Presumably this refers to 2008, but there is no reference.

Hemery?

Someone put this in the notes, can we get a citation or something? Notable alumnus missing: David Hemery, track star. He won three Olympic medals in hurdles - a gold, a silver, and a bronze. Because he was a British citizen, he won as a member of Great Britain's team, but he was brought up in Braintree and graduated from Thayer Academy.
