[edit]We can establish Tegan's date of birth as 22 Sep 1960 from The Gathering, is this worth mentioning, and if so where? Possible canon issues might wantus to avoid putting in the lead section. Tim! 17:30, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
Pics
[edit]We should add more pics, seriously. Tegan was one of the best Who lovelies, in my humble opinion. ;) --Promus Kaa 17:34, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
Pun
[edit]In The Eight Doctors, during the sequence about the 5th Doctor, a game of cricket is proposed, and it is decided that the Doctor and Turlow will bowl and bat; Tegan responds that she will therefore be "fielding all day", an obvious pun on the name of the actress who portrays her. Worth mentioning in the article?--Jeffro77 (talk) 08:20, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Confusion about Janet's accent
[edit]I'm confused about this - in old clips on the Doctor Who DVDs of interviews with Janet around her time on Doctor Who she speaks with a very upper-class posh English accent. So, i take it she put on Tegan's Australian accent then?
However, on the DVD commentaries and a recent talking heads feature on the Five Doctor's DVD re-release, Janet is speaking with an Australian accent. Is this a case of her picking up an English accent when she lived in England working on Doctor Who then returning to her native Australian over time? From looking over the internet i think quite a few people thought Janet wasn't actually Australian (in the vein of Nicola as American Peri).
Anyone able to clarify this? Winterspell (talk) 16:43, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
- According to numerous biographies, Janet Fielding is Australian (like the character Tegan, from Brisbane), as you yourself can tell from her later interviews. But she had been working in Britain for awhile when hired for Doctor Who, so I imagine her accent had "blended down" from exposure to multiple English accents. Finding the exact source will take awhile, but I recall her saying in a DVD commentary (possibly "The Visitation" or "Castrovalva"?), JNT had asked her to "play up" her own accent to sound "more Australian" to British ears. - I have the (1983) Doctor Who 20th Anniversary Special which says this: "Although Janet is Australian, she has no accent in real life, so has to put it on for the part. 'A lot of Australians don't like it at all - they think it sounds ugly and ask why I don't speak nicely like I normally do. In fact, I've toned the accent right down!'" I'm Australian, and IIRC, I remember thinking that Tegan has a very strong, exaggerated Broad Australian accent in her (location shot) opening scenes with Aunt Vanessa in Logopolis. However the accent very quickly calmed down to the extent I hardly noticed it. Even in Australia, at least up to the 1980s, it was pretty common for serious thespians trained in the theatre to normally speak in Cultivated Australian accent. (They want to impress all those haughty directors at auditions.) I'm sure it would have been the same in the UK (regional accents ironed out in acting school.) Fielding was possibly fitting in with this. There's no surprise she was asked to emphasise her Australian accent in the show: in frequently in DW, performances were "big" and exaggerated. Now out of the acting scene, perhaps Fielding isn't bothering to keep up the upper-class accent. Format (talk) 19:31, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
A bit about how Janet Fielding got the job on Dr. Who
[edit]I believe I read (as opposed to saw on television/video) someplace that Janet Fielding was considered to short as she was under the height requirement to be an airline stewardess at the time. It went on to say that she claimed that, I believe Singapore Air, or somesuch in the South East Asian/Australian region, had different regulations because people were shorter in that region. Also a couple of fibs on her resume were mentioned. The studio learned of these, but hired her anyway. It was a long time ago, so I don't remember the source, but it is out there if someone is willing to look for it. This is being added to both the actress' and character's talk pages. Longest serving companion
[edit]The article claims that Rose and Jamie were in more episodes and serials (or stories) than Tegan. By my count, Tegan was in 19 serials and 65 episodes, Jamie was in 22 serials and 117 episodes, Rose was in roughly 25 serials, but only about 32 episodes, so Tegan easily appeared in more episodes. Those numbers are only approximations, assuming they appeared in every episode while a companion (plus the five doctors and the two doctors) and adding about 4 on to Rose's because I can't remember which episodes of series 4 she had cameos in, regardless, Tegan easilly easilly appeared in more episodes than Rose, so I'll change the article accordingly, although I haven't got a source for it other than other pages on Wikipedia. "Sarah Jane was the longest-serving companion non-continuously" Depending on whether or not you include the SJA serial, "Death of The Doctor," that might not be true any longer, since that was her last appearance with The Doctor and also involved Jo, making Jo the longest-serving companion non-continuously. An argument could be made either way, though. (Sarah Jane also was in the parent series, while Jo wasn't. Sarah Jane's adventures with the Tenth Doctor were a recurring thing, not an isolated event.) I'm not taking a side, just saying that it's debatable.71.190.94.94 (talk) 00:38, 13 November 2011 (UTC)
As Doctor Who abandoned the serial format when it was resurrected, Rose was in no serials. Several two-parters, and a few serieses, but no serials.... Prof Wrong (talk) 07:36, 18 May 2013 (UTC)
BBC centenary special
[edit]The trailer at the end of Legend of the Sea Devils, while it clearly shows Ace returning, shows another (to whom Ace is talking) who says that it's ”four decades” since she last had contact with the Doctor. The accent sounds Australian to me… Dsalt (talk) 19:39, 17 April 2022 (UTC)
