Talk:Technics SL-1200/Archive 1
Panasonic steals the gift of song from the world
[edit]Vinal LP's contain more information per second than all other media, period. CD's and Dvd's produce a flat listless sound that is missing much of the range the human ears can detect. By discontinuing the technics 1200, Panasonic is willfully forcing people to listen to lifeless incomplete sound. All of their products here ever after need to be boycotted to let them know the error of their ways. Only blueray is capable of holding the same amount of information, but no one releases songs on blueray using the necessary recording equipment. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.40.5.197 (talk) 21:49, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
I agree. Technics was the only brand in the world that played those great vinal LP's. Audio Hall, Marantz, Denon, Dual, NAD, Rega, Pro-Ject, Thorenson, Stanton, Audio Technica, etc. only play vinyl records. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.138.152.225 (talk) 08:04, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
- Technics played vinyl LPs? Others only vinyl records? Trying to be funny? :P -andy 77.7.113.154 (talk) 12:05, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
- Not true. While records may contain some information in the ultrasonic range, they usually have quite a bit of a roll off in the high frequencies, so even a CD is superior here. CDs have a higher signal to noise ratio as well. With dithering, the signal can be detected well under -100db, so it can reproduce low level detail much better. The channel separation on a CD is better as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:8108:943F:D824:29BA:A187:D8B9:5A6B (talk) 07:16, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
Pictures
[edit]I'll take some pictures, because the pics of the 1210 are not as good as having a pic of a real 1200 MK2, IMHO. Headquarters 07:36, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
Does anyone want to put a (some) better quality picture(s) up? I could, but my camera is rather dated.. Yodudestepoff 18:50, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
Rumours of End of Production
[edit]Does anybody have a link to any sort of official notice or press release or whatever from Panasonic about this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.249.238.158 (talk) 15:19, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
References added regarding the above matter. Technicalspartacus (talk) 14:48, 8 May 2010 (UTC)
User:Voxelized has changed the discontinuation paragraph to rumoured discontinuation. I agree, there seems to have been no official statement from Panasonic, although it's still worth mentioning as Panasonic have stated that they will be making an official statement sometime in 2010. Technicalspartacus (talk) 21:21, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Here's another "discontinued" rumor: http://einestages.spiegel.de/static/authoralbumbackground/15941/der_global_player.html But it's not an actual news article either, just a guest comment, basically. --Kar98 (talk) 18:56, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
Here are two links. Seems like it was announced on October 20, 2010
http://gizmodo.com/5675818/end-of-an-era-panasonic-kills-off-technics-turntables
http://www.tokyoreporter.com/2010/10/28/dead-spin-panasonic-discontinues-technics-analog-turntables/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.169.150.140 (talk) 20:48, 28 October 2010 (UTC)
According to the aforementioned articles only the SL-1200MK6 model will be discontinued. No word about the other models (MK2, MK5) being discontinued, and they are still listed on the official website (http://www.panasonic.com/consumer_electronics/technics_dj/prod_default_analog.asp). I corrected the article accordingly. -- TripleF (talk) 16:42, 30 October 2010 (UTC)
The information above is not correct, because the Panasonic official website (http://panasonic.jp/technics/analog/index.html) doesn't show any turntable (you called the Panasonic USA as the official site, which is like claiming that the Pope lives in Italy). The Asahi Shinbun (http://www.asahi.com/business/update/1020/OSK201010200170.html) reports the news that Panasonic discontinued the Technics SL-1200 mk 6 turntable on October, 21st. The SL-1200 mk 6 was the last turntable produced by Technics. It replaced the mk 5 in 2008 (http://panasonic.jp/technics/history/index.html). If you still find Technics SL-1200 mk 2 or mk 5 on the market or on the Panasonic International websites is because they are the remainings of a massive production. I think you will be able to find them for a long time. But the production is ended. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Punni-punni (talk • contribs) 20:51, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
The following link doesn't find anything: (http://pewa.panasonic.com/search/?q=discontinued+technics&submitBut=Search&numResults=100&andVar=1&sort=0) bit that is a red herring since a search for Technics doesn't give you anything either: (http://pewa.panasonic.com/search/?q=technics&submitBut=Search&numResults=100&andVar=1&sort=0) By that standard, nothing by Technics exists. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.72.12.11 (talk) 17:10, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
Arm Shape rationale
[edit]"S-shaped Tone Arm: Although no longer popular on high end hi-fi turntables, the S-shape arm has two distinct advantages over the straight arm. 1. Less wear on the groove as the cartidge and stylus is better aligned with the groove. 2. Better tracking of the groove, especially during DJ tricks like cueing, spinbacks and scratching." I can't comment on point 2, not being a turntablist myself myslef, but IMHO point 1 is a misunderstanding. A straight arm have an offset angle on the headshell whatsoever; Actually, if you picture the head shell itself and the arm pivot&horizontal axis on a piece of paper, in a given position, the actual shape of the arm in between them does not matter AT ALL from a cartridge/groove alignment point of view ... (there are undiscustably dyanmic/resonance/inertial/compliance issues...but htos would not be summarrised in such a binary statement). I therefore remove part 1 one the sentence above...If somebody wants to revert it please explain here. --MarmotteiNoZ 01:09, 21 October 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by MarmotteNZ (talk • contribs)
Serial numbers and year indication
[edit]Quoted from the main page "New-format serial number: GE4FB001154 (SL-1200MK2 manufactured June 2004)"
I really hope this can be answered: How can you be sure that 2004 was the production year if the new format serial numnber started during the 1990s, this surely means that the above number could indicate both June 1994 or June 2004 as production years?
Announcement on DMC World DJ Championships site
[edit]Where has it gone to? Not even a quotation has remained on the current version of this article. It looks very odd now: "...made the following statement" with nothing actually "following" after that. Either it's archived on DMC site, or removed. -andy 77.7.113.154 (talk) 12:05, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
Removed Modifications and Upgrades section
[edit]This section contained material that was largely opinion and reads like a feature request list for the 1200. This is not encyclopedic material, so I removed it from the article. Rndmnss (talk) 18:05, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Removed some details in "Models" section
[edit]Some of these details may be true, but none of it is sourced, so it's difficult to verify. Also:
- Some information is redundant. I think the right way to do this is to list the new features for each model, rather than repeat features that exist across models.
- The formatting was all messed up.
It would be great if someone could provide a list of new/incremental features for each model/model family. I checked on panasonic's website and they only have the mk2 and mk5. Rndmnss (talk) 04:14, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Pronunciation
[edit]What is the official way to pronounce Technics? (By "official," I mean the way it was pronounced by members of the company itself.) I've heard a lot of people pronounce it like the word "techniques" (tek-NEEX), while others pronounce it phonetically (TEK-nix). Which one is correct? 64.185.131.107 (talk) 17:18, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
- TEK-nix is the correct pronunciation in the English. I can't speak about the native Japanese pronunciation, it may differ slightly. I think that this is not a matter for concern on this page, and is more appropriate for the Talk:Technics talk page itself. HenryHayes (talk) 10:32, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
