The title of this article suggests that it's about "targeted surveillance" (in most literature it's "targeted interception" though), but actually the article says hardly anything about what "targeted surveillance" is and how it is conducted and used for, but only mentions opinions pro and contra. That's fine, but then call the article "Debate on targetd surveillance" or something like that. P2Peter (talk) 04:00, 3 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@P2Peter: It's the competing model to mass surveillance. And as the lead already says it's a form of surveillance that is targeted on specific persons of interest opposed to mass/bulk/dragnet surveillance. I don't know what more to add to that as it's really a simple concept. But you may have a point here. One could add a section like "Methods of targeting" that outlines ways by which intelligence agencies can/do filter out / determine their targets. Or a section of specific "Instances of targeted surveillance" etc. I've just created this article and it certainly is missing crucial information.
Thank you for your response. I made my remark because many articles on NSA/government surveillance that appeared here since the Snowden-revelations have hardly any information about what such programs or systems actually do (technically etc.), but instead focus on public and government reactions on those programs, which is of course related, but still different. If you want to improve your article here, you can for example refer to existing articles like telephone tapping and lawful interception, which have more information about how targeted surveillance/interception actually takes place.
