Multiple issues

By way of background, this article was started earlier this year, by a contributor who had made only one contribution in the previous seven years and has made none since. [1] Since then the only substantial contributions have been by two IPs with few other edits. [2] [3] There's at least a possibility of WP:COI issues, particularly in view of the unencyclopedic tone of the current article.

There are currently [4] three references and five other external links (two in the External links section, and three in the infobox). One of these is to the European Internet Exchange Association website and appears irrelevant. Six are to the TREX website. The remaining link, the only one that is potentially a reliable secondary source, is to an article in a Finnish language website Digitoday, announcing the opening of the facility. We have no article on this website but Finnish Wikipedia does at fi:Digitoday.

It isn't clear to me whether there is even any claim to notability, but there isn't a case for it based on the current content. Possibly the European Internet Exchange Association of which this organisation appears to be a member might be more notable, but that article has already been deleted. Unfortunately it didn't get as far as AfD, so there's no discussion to link to. Andrewa (talk) 04:47, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Response to Multiple Issues

Background on me

I am indeed affiliated with this exchange point. I have not created an account, because I predict it would face the fate of User:Marcod'Itri. That is, I would seldom contribute and I would keep forgetting the password or I would set an unsecure password. The account would be more of a problem than a solution for everyone involved. Instead, I've tried to limit all my edits to one IP address.

Background on the article

I first noticed that there was a red link to an article on TREX some five years ago. I thought that was nice, but that was it. Occasionally someone brought it up and occasionally I tried to get some frequent contributor to write the article. But everyone kept telling me "do it yourself." I didn't do it myself because of the obvious WP:COI issues, until this year.

When I finally did decide to write it, I asked User:Marcod'Itri to start it off and then worked from there. I tried to keep the tone of the article as matter of fact as possible, but being inexperienced I've obviously failed. I looked at what was written about some other IXPs and I asked people who knew about TREX what they thought was important about TREX and included those things.

Some people I talked to said that TREX Workshops were the most important contribution TREX has to the Finnish Internet, as it is the only NOG in Finland. So I added a section on it. Now that I looked at what I had written there, I think maybe it looks a bit suspect. In fact, I edited it further (see below) to try to make it better.

I am hoping someone will fix the tone of the article. If someone does, I will keep my paws off the article except to occasionally update hardware and statistical information. If I think something else should be added, I'll ask on the talk page...

References

IXPs seldom get mentioned in media, because usually only ISPs connect and interact with them. If an IXP experiences a failure, it would immediately attract media attention. But as they tend to work very well, only people working relatively close to them know anything about them. Some are even shrouded in secrecy on purpose.

I tried to fix up some of the reference problems you mentioned: I removed the see also section. I agree it was useless. I think I originally added it because I saw some other IXP had it. Or maybe Marco had initially written it.

I also added an external reference to the research claims. It's a joint press release with two Finnish universities and CSC – IT Center for Science on one research platform. This news was picked up by some Finnish media as well, but I gather the English language reference is more useful than a Finnish article in a Finnish newspaper?

I also just found an existing article on Internet Network Operators' Groups and cross linked that with the TREX Workshops. There's also a YouTube channel on TREX Workshops [5] but I've left that out, because I thought it would look too commercial. Now I find myself thinking maybe it isn't. I'll let someone else decide. Maybe I've done too much harm here already...

Notability

IXPs are a crucial part of the Internet. Unfortunately, the media doesn't care about them as long as they work. The biggest IXPs like LINX, AMS-IX and DE-CIX have hired active publicists, but even in their case 90% of what they diseminate gets discarded by the media. Thus it's hard to find external references for IXPs.

I acknowledge that an IXP in a small country like Finland might not be so notable on the global scale. But I think this article is very important to anyone trying to find out about Category:Internet in Finland.

In fact, the Finnish government has recognized that IXPs are critical infrastructure because pretty much all other critical infrastructure is dependent on the Internet these days. This means that the government will do anything it can to make sure that Finnish IXPs continue to function in emergencies. Here's a report on the subject from the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications: [6] Apart from the abstract on page 4, it's not written in English, but I think the abstract verifies enough of what I claim here. The Finnish IXPs are mentioned at the bottom of page 38.

Euro-IX

I don't know why the page on the European Internet Exchange Association was deleted, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was because lack of contribution. Euro-IX suffers from the same lack of media coverage as its members. Searching Wikipedia seems to indicate that most of its members' wikipages do mention their membership. Most of its members also mention it on their own web site. Surely this verifies that it exists?

As I actually know something about Euro-IX, I could contribute on it, if someone else first starts off the page. I think it's sister organizations APIX, LAC-IX and AF-IX as well as their new umbrella organization IX-F could use a Wikipedia page.
