Gasparilla

You mean Gasparilla isn't adult oriented already? Every time it rolls around there's a lot of talk about women flashing just to get beads.--24.92.194.173 06:50, 2 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Legend differs from reality. The Night parade is more for that, the day parade has been cleaned up a great deal. The boat parade has all kinds of antics on the water, mostly involving throwing water baloons. The city changed policy some time ago. If you flash at the children's parade you WILL be arrested. Flashing at the day parade can get you arrested, on a boat it might get you arrested, but at the night parade no police officer will care, unless the offender is very very crude. Dominick 10:33, 2 Jun 2004 (UTC)

The jokes never are made about the children's parade. Flashing during that is just plain stupid. I understand that the night parade is more raunchy, but the regular Gasparilla is known for flashing as well, moreso than the night parade specifically because of the "inappropriate" nature of the flashing during the day parade. It is my understanding that the children's parade was made to avoid the adult themes of the day parade. I've also heard stories of men wearing fake boobs and flashing those as a kind of joke. Still, the history of the Gasparilla might make an interesting anecdote.--24.92.194.173 23:59, 2 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Strip Clubs

I can see naming Redner, but, I dont think we should have much in the way of wiki links for specific clubs, I don't even like the name in there. It isn't censorship, but denying preferential advertising for a purient-interest orented business.Dominick 11:16, 5 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I can't speak for other users, but I have no interest in drumming up business for Redner, et al. But these clubs are a fact of life, and to omit them based on personal preference is POV. The page also contains a link to Busch Gardens, should we omit it as well? Mons Venus is as much of a landmark in its own way as Busch Gardens. It's a moot point, though, as no Mons article exists, but if one did, I can't imagine a NPOV argument against linking to it from this article. Gamaliel 18:53, 5 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Busch Gardens being a major anchor of North Tampa, like USF, UT and the Buc are. We could consider Westshore a Major anchor of the community. Mons is more of a curosity, but most people hear about other attractions first. WHat would make you leave out Alessi Bakery, or Antraniks? Why leave out the Hub Pub Downtown? Like I said, I think Strip Clubs as a topic can change, and featuring a single business with a article is too detailed, and I think as a whole tilts the article towards stripping as a major part of Tampa. I have been tempted to blend that into one heading of night life, and include Goths, Strip Clubs and the Bar and Resteraunt cene in one heading. Dominick 19:24, 5 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Mons is a landmark that is world renowned unsigned comment from User:65.32.166.217

Crime

finally! we needed an article about crime in tampa. we are 15th in the country in crime rate. we need to be noticed. -victor

High schools

This sentence has been added twice: "Blake High School is in Tampa, Florida. It received a grade of "C" by the Florida Department of Education in 2003 and 2004". I don't know why Blake has been singled out, as it's not the only Tampa high school and not even the only one to get a C. Several got Ds. Gamaliel 17:44, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC)

  • Good point. I've added a number of other high schools. Please list the grades of them, if you know them. anthony (see warning) 19:40, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I don't see the point of a list of area high schools, and I see even less point to an incomplete list. I haven't worked on a lot of city articles though, so do other city articles have similar lists?

The grades are publicly available on the Florida Department of Education web site. You can add them if you wish but I personally won't as I don't see the point of having to update the rankings each year for information of relatively little encyclopedic worth. A link to the rankings would do just as well. Gamaliel 19:50, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC)

  • Feel free to complete the list, or add the grades. I might do this in the future, but not right now. I don't see a problem with having some information and not other information, and if we're going to mention Malibu Grand Prix and Gorilla Theatre we might as well mention Gaither High School and Tampa Prep. anthony (see warning) 19:58, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Sorry, I don't think an incomplete list with one grade and 3 sets of gps coordinates is noteworthy or encyclopedic. I also don't think it's fair of you to toss a bunch of half-complete information in and then tell everyone else to deal with it. If you think it's worthy of being here, then do the research and finish it instead of telling everyone else to do it for you. Gamaliel 07:20, 13 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Look, I don't think the demographics section of this article is noteworthy or encyclopedic either, but I recognize that there needs to be a consensus to remove it. I think it's unfair that we don't break "Asian" into Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, etc., but that doesn't give me the right to go in and remove the whole racial makeup section. You are the one demanding changes that you yourself are not willing to make. I think the information is worthy AS IS. If you'd prefer no information to partial information, then it's your responsibility to complete the information. anthony (see warning) 14:48, 13 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Here's a list of Tampa schools: http://education.tbo.com/education/highschoolmap.htm. Are you willing to do some editing to make this a better article or are you just cutting and pasting stuff from vfd? Gamaliel 19:05, 13 Oct 2004 (UTC)

  • I'll add them all, but I don't see why you didn't just do that yourself. I got my list from the US census data, not vfd. anthony (see warning) 15:04, 14 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Racism

History Section: Removed ref. that Charlie Wall was a cracker. That was not relevant to the topic at hand.

I'm not sure I understand how the term "cracker", referring to a Florida native, is racist? - Aerobird 02:07, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
See [1] -- Dalbury(Talk) 02:36, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
Well, I've always considered myself a "Florida Cracker", so the term isn't offensive to me. Weird. - Aerobird 01:19, 15 January 2006 (UTC) (Sorry I forgot to sign yesterday...)
I understand. I often call myself "half-redneck", and "redneck" was an insult when I was growing up in Miami. I only became aware that "cracker" could be perjorative a few years ago, although I should have gotten a clue from the way Tubbs kept calling Crockett a "cracker" in Miami Vice. -- Dalbury(Talk) 03:05, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

Removing population section

I think this is very useful information but not in its current form. If someone can make this into a very concise, clear paragraph instead of a mere list, I think it merits mentioning, but not in its current state. I'm placing it on the talk page. Mike H (Talking is hot) 01:59, July 25, 2005 (UTC)

  • Restored to article I found the population progression very interesting and I am restoring it to the page. I don't object to cleaning it up into a paragraph, but I think that the data should remain in its current form until that happens. PlainSight 15:09, 20 August 2005 (UTC)
Is there any special reason why you're not cleaning it up into a paragraph? Mike H (Talking is hot) 15:18, August 20, 2005 (UTC)
I found the information interesting in its current form. I'm a facts & charts kinda guy. However, I wouldn't have any problem with someone converting it to a paragraph, but I personally like it in its current state. PlainSight 15:54, 21 August 2005 (UTC)

Devil Rays

I had previously removed the Devil Rays from the Tampa Sports teams section. I really don't care enough to get into an edit war over it, but doesn't leaving it there contribute to the ambiguation of the City of Tampa vs. the Metro-area known as "Tampa Bay"?

Maybe someone else will care enough to keep it out. I will remove it one more time.

I have edited the "one more time" mentioned above

You're right; they should be in the St. Petersburg article, not here. And they're out! ;) - Aerobird 00:39, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Schools

I noticed that both Riverview and Plant City Highschools are listed in this article. Is anyone else of the opinion that these should be removed? Riverview is in south-east Hillsborough county, and Plant City is closer to Lakeland than Tampa.

These would be correctly included if the article was on the county instead of the city. --TecBrat 10:23, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

I added the section about charter schools in Tampa, Florida. The only charter school that I know of in this area is my school, Trinity School for Children. Not the best name, I know. If anybody knows of any more charter schools in the area known as Tampa, please add them. Thank you. Later!!! 64.12.116.135 04:39, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

Crime section

I removed the entire section as it all needs to be reworded and cited with sources. Crime numbers are important but look even more impressive when backed up with evidence. The names of gangs in each part of town also reads like original research. Mike H. That's hot 00:21, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

Strongly agreed, thanks for bringing that point to the table. People should cite sources before editing period. --Moreau36; 0016, 1 January 2006

No, i reaserched it at THE TAMPA BAY GANGS PREVENTION PROGRAM website. i think u should put that article back on. - victor

Cite your sources. It's especially important when you're making accusations like a city having a rampant gang problem. Having a mere list of gangs is not helpful either, because some gangs can have 10 members and others can have hundreds. Mike H. That's hot 02:08, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

Why dont you write a section on Tampa crime then smart one -victor

Read WP:DICK and please refrain from taking that tone with me or any other editor. Mike H. That's hot 18:08, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

ill talk how i wanna talk - Hector

Please use language consistent with Wikipedia policies (WP:DICK, WP:AGF). ALC Washington 02:12, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

for real, if your gonna erase my article, then u should write a Tampa crime article that is better. -victor

Please use language consistent with Wikipedia policies (WP:DICK, WP:AGF). Furthermore, no section on crime is better than an unsourced or poorly written section on crime. ALC Washington 02:12, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

I rewrote a crime section in the Tampa main page. My sources are http://www.morganquitno.com/cit04pop.htm and http://www.safetampabay.org/tampacrime/tampagang.html please improve if needed. -VG

I've notice that the section on crime is back up again. It looks bad on Tampa when it comes to gangs and blacks. That why it was erased the last time around. JeffreyAllen1975 01:35, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

I guess the section on crime is ok. Maybe it's just me? JeffreyAllen1975 01:58, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

How come sombody deleted the Tampa crime section without at least noting it here on the Tampa discussion page? -VG

culture section

who erased the culture section. that section was well written.......it was that Mike H. guy wasnt it.

Please assume good faith. If you have concerns about a recent edit, please articulate those concerns here, rather than making statements ad hominem. ALC Washington 02:15, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Most major city articles in the United States have a Culture section. Why was the Culture section on Tampa's article erased, why?? JeffreyAllen1975 21:39, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

I know, we should write one becuase The city of tampa has a unigue hispani culture.-VG

Nickname

User:Joececchini added Big Guava as a nickname. I reverted the edit. I've never heard it used, and want to see a reliable reference cited before allowing it back in. -- Dalbury(Talk) 09:38, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

Here's the source (or list of sources) you are looking for: http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=The+big+guava&fr=FP-tab-web-t&toggle=1&cop=&ei=UTF-8

I was going to bite my tounge and hold off the personal remark, but the temptation is too strong:
Was that so freakin' hard that you couldn't have done it instead of deleting someone's edit?

--TecBrat 14:53, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

Please read the ongoing discussion on how to handle these matters at Wikipedia:Verifiability. To summarize, it is the responsibility of the editor adding information to provide references, and not the responsibility of the rest of us. -- Dalbury(Talk) 16:18, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
The "Big Guava" nickname is also used by some Tampa newspaper columnists, it appears. - Aerobird 01:21, 15 January 2006 (UTC)
Is it just those columnists that use it, or does it have more general use? I have a dictionary of slang that talks about synthetic slang, slang invented by writers that almost never has any use outside the authors' writings. In any case, if you can cite a verifiable and reputable source, it's allowed. -- Dalbury(Talk) 02:05, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

I ADDED that a nicknake for the city of Tampa is "T-TOWN". I have heard it used commonly throught Tampa. I have also heard people use the term "THE BIG GUAVA" as well so i added it back to the page.

1/19 -VG

I've heard plenty of people refer to Tampa as "The Big Guava," ever heard of Guavaween?—Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.119.41.13 (talkcontribs)

References

This article needs some references added to it.--JeffreyAllen1975 00:52, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

It would be helpful if you pointed out what needs to be referenced. Mike H. That's hot 00:54, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
Everything in the article should be sourced. To quote the verifiability policy, One of the keys to writing good encyclopedia articles is to understand that they should refer only to facts, assertions, theories, ideas, claims, opinions, and arguments that have already been published by a reputable publisher. The goal of Wikipedia is to become a complete and reliable encyclopedia, so editors should cite credible sources so that their edits can be verified by readers and other editors. -- Dalbury(Talk) 01:56, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
That was pretty unhelpful. Examples please, if you're going to be insistent on it. Mike H. That's hot 03:14, 21 January 2006 (UTC)
I'll say it again, everything in every article needs to be referenced. The first paragraph of Wikipedia:Verifiability says, "Wikipedia should only publish material that is verifiable ... so editors should cite credible sources so that their edits can be verified by readers and other editors." In the section Wikipedia:Verifiability#When adding information, the policy says, "The burden of evidence lies with the editor who has made the edit. Editors should therefore provide references. Any edit lacking a source may be removed. If you doubt the truthfulness of an unsourced statement, remove it to the talk page. Otherwise, just request a source." Do you want me to start challenging individual statements in the article? Because, if I did and verifiable sources were not cited in the article in a reasonable time, I would be free to remove those statements from the article. I'm not looking to do that. I'm trying to prod editors with an interest in an article to provide sources. If I don't know a subject, I don't know where to look for references. Someone familiar with the subject of an article should easily be able to find citable sources. -- Dalbury(Talk) 11:51, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

History of Tampa

I copeyed and pasted the tampa history article from Tampa main page to a seperate article named HISTORY OF TAMPA. i did not add anything to the article(s). the only thing that was not succesful during the process was i could not transfer the old picture of YBOR CITY-franklin st. to the article.

Feel free to add that and more photographs that are apropriate for the History of Tampa. If you want to delete the history section on the Tampa main page, just give me the thumbs up.

if you find any problems with my transfer of the HISTORY OF TAMPA page please notify me. -Thanks VG

Got the pic (and the wikilinks) to the History of Tampa page, and added a link from the main page. I'll leave it to others to decide how much of the History should remain on the main page... - Aerobird 00:50, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
